DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Teaching:  Taught Animal Parasitology (Biol 4426), Parasitology Lab. (Biol 4426L), and Zoology (Biol 3425), Ichthyology (Biol 5417) and Ichthyology Lab (Biol 5417L)..  I plan to describe and teach two graduate level courses in Fish Parasitology and Fish Diseases.  Also guided 12 students, 10 undergraduate and two graduate, in Special Problems in Zoology (Biol 4901-2 and Biol 6901).  I mentored a MARC-Sloan student, Odmara Barreto-Chang, who presented results of her research with me at the Junior ACS meeting in March 1999.   I have one graduate student in the masters program.

Departmental Committees:  Serve on the Departmental Development, and Conferences and Seminars Committees.

Graduate Committees:  Have served on the graduate committees of 5 PhD. and  8 masters students.  I have also served as the Graduate School Representative for 2 masters exams.

Research - DNER/UPR Projects:  Published the book "Parasites of Offshore Big Game Fishes of Puerto Rico and the Western Atlantic" (1996); perform biannual inspections of the Maricao Fish Hatchery for fish diseases; carry out disease diagnosis of freshwater and marine fishes for DNR biologists and others; investigate fish kills (fresh water and marine); analyze reservoir fishes for parasite levels; prepared short articles about fish parasites and diseases to be used by the DNER Office of Education; conduct short courses about fish parasite and disease problems for DNER and other governmental agencies and am preparing the manual "Techniques for fish parasite and disease examinations".  Other research, at present non-funded research includes investigation of the fungus causing Tilapia Wasting Disease; identification of fish pathogenic bacteria not previously reported from Puerto Rico; comparing fish parasite diversity in three oceans; biogeography of marine fish parasitic isopods; "new" life-cycle strategies of marine fish parasitic isopods; surveying snappers and groupers for parasite diversity and distribution.

Cooperative work with other professors in the Department: Participated in the writing of the Howard Hughes grant proposal in 1995 and researched the feasibility of a USDA proposal studying clams with Dr. Milded Chaparro.  Have worked with Dr. Doris Betancourt with special problems students working on fish bacteria and plan joint papers concerning them.  Am working with Dr. Maria Vargas studying fungi in fishes.

Additional Activities:  Participated as a professor in the Chautauqua Course, Natural History of Mona Island, in both 1997 and 1998 which was attended by other UPR and mainland college and university professors under the auspices of the AMP of the UPR.  Presented a poster "Parasites of Offshore Big Game Fishes of Puerto Rico and the Western Atlantic" at the American Society of Parasitologists Annual Meeting (1997); a paper entitled "Mycotic wasting disease in two species of tilapia associated with the hyphomycete Paecilomyces lilacinus from Puerto Rico" at the 62nd meeting of the American Mycological society (1998).  Made Trips to the Galapagos Islands (1996), the Cayman Islands (1998) and Africa (Kenya and Tanzania) (1999).  Was invited to do cooperative research with Dr. Abul Bashirullah, Instituto Oceanographico, Universidad de Orient, Venezuela for two weeks, July 6-24, 1999

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Supported completely from grants received.

DNER/UPR Projects: In addition to the duties described in the current job above activities included preparing and publishing the books "Parasites of Puerto Rican Freshwater Sport Fishes" in English (1994) and Spanish (1995);  analysis of reservoir fishes for parasite levels and correlating these levels with water quality (paper in prep.); presentation of an annual workshop on freshwater and marine fish diseases and methods of fish kill investigation.

Sea Grant Funded Project: analysis of white post larval syndrome occurring at a local freshwater shrimp farm and recommendations that alleviated the syndrome.

Community Service: volunteered with the Caribbean Stranding Network performing necropsies on whales, dolphins, turtles, manatees and identified parasites found.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Research:  Examined more than 1000 marine fish specimens for parasitic isopods from fresh and preserved material at more than 20 marine and fisheries laboratories in Japan and the Ryukyu Islands.  Another 300 specimens of 200 species of fishes were examined for total, metazoan parasites for comparison with similar work done in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico.  An unusual fish‑mollusk relationship was discovered and described. (22 papers resulted from this work and others are in prep.)
