The Canopy Trimming Experiment: Large-scale Ecology in the Luquillo Experimental Forest
"Two major hurricanes have affected El Yunque since starting the Luquillo Experimental Forest Long-term Ecological Research Program in 1988.  These were Hugo in 1989 and Georges in 1998.  As a result of our onging studies, we have a good idea of how the forest changes after a hurricane.  However, we do not know what mechanisms drive those changes.  In fact, no one does -- this is cutting-edge research.  It is critical that we understand the mechanisms to be able to predict how Caribbean forests will be affected if hurricane frequency and intensity increase, as global climate change models suggest they will.  The purpose of the Canopy Trimming Experiment is to separate the effects of canopy opening and increased litterfall, which occur concurrently with a hurricane.  Our presentation will, we hope, be of interest to members of the Sierra Club, as we introduce some of the globally important ecological research being conducted in El Yunque.  We are also inviting all those interested to sign up at the meeting for a field trip to our research site on Saturday the 19th.
