Celebración del Día Internacional de las Aves Migratorias

Palmer PR- El Servicio Forestal Federal, invita al público en general a la Cuarta Celebración del Día Internacional de las Aves Migratorias a celebrarse el domingo 5 de Diciembre en el Bosque Nacional del Caribe, El Yunque. La actividad comenzará a las 6:00 AM en el Centro de Visitantes El Portal, el cual está localizado en la carretera PR 191 km. 4.0. De seis a siete de la mañana el bosque despierta con una sinfonía de sonidos y es el mejor momento para aprender a identificar los cantos de las aves. Las aves capturadas en las mallas que habrán sido colocadas previamente, serán mostradas al público por un perito que les facilitará el reconocer sus características y canto desde esta hora hasta las 10:30am y en la tarde desde la 1:00 a 3:00pm. También tendremos a Maria Chuzema y a Woodsy Owl organizando actividades para los niños.

A las 11:00 am, el Sr. José Salguero Faría, ecólogo, ex-presidente de la Sociedad Ornitológica de Puerto Rico y especialista en aves migratorias, presentará una charla audiovisual sobre la importancia de las aves migratorias y la conservación de su hábitat. Esta presentación se llevará a cabo en el teatro del Centro de Visitantes de El Portal. Esta actividad de educación ambiental es una oportunidad para aprender acerca de nuestras aves nativas y migratorias. Las aves migratorias necesitan mudarse a otro hábitat durante una época del año para completar sus ciclos de vida, reproducirse o pasar el invierno. Estas aves han estado sufriendo mermas poblacionales debido a la pérdida de hábitat de anidaje por la fragmentación y a los cambios en el uso de terrenos en los Estados Unidos y Canada y la pérdida de hábitat para pasar el invierno en América Latina y el Caribe. El Yunque es uno de los refugios de mayor importancia para aves migratorias y nativas en Puerto Rico.

Palmer PR- The Caribbean National Forest known locally as El Yunque, invites the public to its Fourth International Migratory Bird Day Celebration which is to be held on Sunday, December 5th. The activity will begin at 6:00am at the El Portal Visitor Center located on road PR 191 km. 4.0. From 6:00 to 7:00am the Forest awakens to a morning concert of sounds and this is the best time for learning how to identify birdcalls. Birds captured in previously installed mist nets will be shown to visitors by skilled biologists who will describe their characteristics and calls from 6:00am until 10:30am and in the afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00pm. We will also have Maria Chuzema and Woodsy Owl organizing activities for children.

At 11:00am Mr. José Salguero Faría, an ecologist and a specialist in migratory birds, will give an audiovisual presentation about the importance of migratory birds and the conservation of their habitat. Presentation will be at the El Portal Rain Forest Center. This environmental education activity will present an opportunity to learn more about our native and migratory birds species. Migratory birds are those than need to move to a different type of habitat in a season of the year to complete their life cycles, reproduce or spend the winter. These birds have been suffering from population declines due to nesting habitat losses caused by fragmentation and by land use changes in the United States and Canada and wintering habitat losses in Latin America and the Caribbean. El Yunque is one of the most important migratory and native bird refuges in Puerto Rico.
