Bachelor in Arts in Industrial Biotechnology

A concentration of faculty researchers and professional staff from the Departments of Biology, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering has been successfully working in developing an undergraduate program in Industrial Biotechnology. As a result of multiple efforts, the program was initiated in August of 1994. Today, the Industrial Biotechnology program has been very successful and widely accepted by our students.
Currently the Industrial Biotechnology program is an interdisciplinary program within the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus. Areas of expertise represented in the campus includes microbial physiology, molecular genetics, plant molecular biology, bioremediation of hazardous substances, bioengineering, fermentation, thermodynamics, analytical chemistry, and biochemistry among others.
Industrial Biotechnology is the discipline that makes use of scientific knowledge and techniques available, primarily in the fields of microbiology, biochemistry and biochemical engineering, to contribute in the development of agriculture, medicine and environmental sciences. The aim program is to prepare professionals at the undergraduate level to effectively perform in industrial processes that make use of living cells, particularly microorganisms, or their products. Our graduates are fully prepared to pursue either careers in todays fast-paced biotechnology industries, including the pharmaceutical and food industries, agriculture, environmental and other biotechnology sectors or graduates studies in the field of their choice.
