Conexión Universitaria-Impacto de la Biotecnología en la Universidad de Puerto Rico

On October 21, we celebrated the activity called “Conexión Universitaria,” organized by the UPR Central Administration at the UPR-Mayagüez Campus.  The initiative brought together over 130 high school counselors, teachers and students of public and private high schools from the southwest region of Puerto Rico.  The main objective was to expose the participants to emerging academic programs in the area of biotechnology.  A panel moderated by Dr. Lorenzo Saliceti with the topic “Biotechnology: its impact in UPR and Puerto Rico,” presented the industrial perspective points of view by Eng. Reinaldo Hernández (Quality Manager of Lilly del Caribe) and Dr. Cynthia Romero (Quality Manager from Ortho Biologics).  In addition, Dr. Carlos Tollinche presented the role of INDUNIV in promoting industrial and academic collaborations.  Finally, Dr. Rosa Buxeda presented the initiatives in the Industrial Biotechnology Program at UPR-M.  A booth of the IB Program with hands-on demonstrations by our students and administrative staff was part of the exhibitions on display for this event.

The Industrial Biotechnology Program participated in the October 15 activity at UPR-Humacao called: Conexión Universitaria-Impacto de la Biotecnología en la Universidad de Puerto Rico.  In this event 200 high school counselors and teachers from the North-eastern part of the island received orientation about the importance of biotechnology and academic programs in this field for high school graduates.  Our program distributed the brochures of our BS program curriculum and the application forms for the 2006 Biotechnology Summer Camp.
