Short course “Advances in Environmental Remediation” offered April 1-4, 2007
The short course “Advances in Environmental Remediation” was offered April 1-4, 2007, at Casa Pueblo, Adjuntas. This course was sponsored by the Industrial Biotechnology Program and the “Instituto Comunitario de Biodiversidad y Cultura.” The faculty that offered the course were: from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, Dr. Arturo Massol (course coordinator) and Dr. Carlos Rodríguez; from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Dr. Terry Hazen and Dr. Eoin Brodie.
Twenty students from the Industrial Biotechnology Program analyzed case studies from environmental problems of Puerto Rico and proposed alternative solutions using molecular bioremediation tools.
This is the third time in which the Industrial Biotechnology Program sponsors this experience, so that our students will gain conciousness on the role and leadership that we, as scientists, can exert to handle environmental problems that affect our ecosystems; and to put our knowledge in helping our communities. |
