Gayle W. Griggs, Ed.D

Biography

Gayle W. Griggs grew up here in Puerto Rico, graduating from St. John’s high school in Condado.  She received a B. A. from Austin College in Sherman, Texas, an M. A. in Communication Arts from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Ed.D. from Nova Southeastern University in Education, specializing in Instructional Technology and Distance Education in 2011.

Dr. Griggs has been a professor at UPRM since 2000 and a natural teacher since her childhood. Her life has been devoted to teaching, having taught Sunday school as a youngster, mathematics and English to children with learning disabilities in high school, beginner’s Spanish to her peers in college, and after she married, she taught English to 8th – 9th – and 10th grade students at a private school in San German. At UPRM, she has offered a variety of courses, including Intermediate Composition I and II (INGL 3103-3104), Public Speaking (INGL 3250), Expository Writing (INGL 3231), Caribbean Literature (INGL 3318), and INGL 6996 (TADS/UTD).

During Dr. Griggs’ tenure at UPRM, she designed and established the graduate Teaching Assistant course, INGL 6996. She has also published a series of instructional modules for online access, in addition to working actively with both students and the faculty at large in the use and promotion of technology in the classroom.  Further, she has presented a number of workshops to graduate and undergraduate students on topics such as public speaking skills, writing résumés, interviewing techniques, writing principles and strategies, and conversational English.

Dr. Griggs has served on various graduate theses committees and has represented the Office of Graduate Studies for numerous thesis defenses. Moreover, she served as Associate Director of the Department of English from 2007 to 2010.

In her free time, Gayle enjoys kayaking on the Caribbean Sea, volunteering at the local veterinarian, baking, writing, and gardening in her yard. She lives in Lajas with her husband, her five dogs, and her two cats. She has four children and four grandchildren.
