In an endeavor with the Department of Energy, Savanna River (DoE-SR), the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez (UPRM) is providing funds for scholarships aimed at enhancing the human resources in relevant science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. UPRM/DoE-SR Research Scholarships will be awarded to graduate and undergraduate students at UPRM who demonstrate superior academic achievement in the relevant fields.

The UPRM/DoE-SR scholarship is limited to:

  • UPRM students (B.S., M.S., Ph.D.) in all STEM areas, regardless of nationality, race, gender, age, or disability.
  • Individuals with evidence of academic achievement (such as grade point average, class rank, honors or other designations)., Students must have good standing at UPRM and a GPA of 3.0 out of a 4.0 scale.

Graduate Students

  • Students will receive $917/month during the academic semesters and $1,000/month for the summer period.
  • Graduate tuition up to $3000 per year

Undergraduate Students

  • $1,300/semester and $600/month for the summer period

Criteria for Selection

Applications will be evaluated using academic records, essays, letters of recommendation, the application itself, and other appropriate materials as the basis for determining the extent to which candidates meet the eligibility requirements and the selection criteria.
The following will be considered as positive factors in choosing successful candidates:

  • Evidence of superior academic achievement
  • Degree of promise of continuing achievement
  • Participation in research activities
  • Faculty sponsorship
  • Commitment to advancing the knowledge and practice in STEM areas relevant to DoE-SR

Reviewers may also look at additional factors such as viability of proposed research activity, student’s financial needs for degree completion, time for degree completion, and others.

Conditions of Scholarship

  • Scholarship recipients must be registered full-time students in good standing at UPRM during the scholarship period. They are required to be enrolled in a full-time program leading to B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. degree in a STEM field of study.  
  • Recipients must participate in research activities during the scholarship period. Research activities must be sponsored by a UPRM faculty in STEM areas.
  • Recipients must participate in activities sponsored by the UPRM/DoE-SR program
  • Recipients must present their work in at least 2 meetings: the annual program meeting; and a local, regional, national, or international meeting.
