Rosa Roman is the Director of the English Department and a Full Professor at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez campus where she has worked since 1990. She earned her PhD at the Pennsylvania State University in the College of Education in 2007 in Curriculum & Instruction. Dr. Roman teaches upper-undergraduate and graduate TESOL courses and works with graduate thesis research. Some of the courses she teaches are: Structure of English, TESL Materials and Testing, Perspectives of English as a Second Language, Theory and Methodology of English Teaching, and Practice of the English Teaching. Her research areas in graduate theses are reading and writing in ESL, reluctant readers, writing in ESL, Critical Pedagogy, Social Justice, cultural studies, critical discourse analysis, and curriculum studies. She has chaired 16 successful theses and collaborated in 24 graduate committees either as a reader or representative of the Office of Graduate Studies. Her experiences include the accreditation of the English Department by NCTE and work as editor and translator for UPRM’s NCATE and CAEP accreditations. She was the 2016 PRTESOL President and the 2019 Western Chapter PRTESOL President.

She has also worked in several projects with DECEP, TTP, and CRUISE, the PR Department of Education (AForMAR, PBL, and Web Tools for Teachers), mNET (Mobilizing National Educator Talent) a project with Ohio State University and other 14 institutions in the US; and in the initiative of the DEPR and UPRM Project Based Learning initiative with Social Science teachers in Puerto Rico.
