“This Watery World: Humans and the Sea”

“This Watery World: Humans and the Sea” (a collection of essays edited by Prof. Nandita Batra and former grad student Vartan Messier, based on the CEA-CC conference of the same name held in October 2006) was published by CEA-CC Publications in December 2007. The volume was very well received, and the editors (Nandita Batra and Vartan Messier) have been offered a contract for a second edition by Cambridge Scholars Press in the United Kingdom. Sneak Preview of “El Abuelo”

You are cordially invited to a sneak preview of the short film “El Abuelo,” directed by Antonio Yordan and starring Miguelangel Suarez . “El Abuelo” was funded by the Puerto Rico Film Commission. The screening will be at 5:30, Monday February 25 in La Cueva del Tarzan. Antonio is a UPRM graduate who took many film and English classes when he was a student here. Come say hi and give him your feedback on his work.

Dr. Judy Casey Paper Presentation

In March, Dr. Judy Casey, in collaboration with Dr. Beth Virtanen, will be presenting a paper entitled “Writing Out Loud in a Bilingual Writing Center: Easier, Harder, Better, Scary, Rude?”at the Writing Centers Association Conference at the University of Oklahoma. This presentation outlines the history of the Arts and Sciences Writing Center with a focus on one particular SLA issue: the advantages and disadvantages of a situation in which students who are required to write in English often need to discuss their work in Spanish.
