The Department of English provides courses of instruction
to satisfy the University's requirements in English
for all students at the Mayagüez Campus. In addition,
students have the opportunity to take English courses
to meet their particular needs in conversation, public
speaking, composition, creative writing and technical
writing.
For those students who wish to major in English,
the department offers a two track programs leading to
a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Students may major in either
literature or linguistics, and may plan their studies
to take courses in both areas.
The Department also offers a Master of Arts in English
Education and opportunities for undergraduate students
to complete teaching certification requirements.
Admission to Undergraduate Program: Candidates for admission at the UPR-Mayagüez must
file an application for admission with the Admission
Office. Applicants must have a high school diploma or
its equivalent from an educational institution duly
accredited by the Department of Education of Puerto
Rico and IGS of at least 2.50.
Prospective applicants for admission must take the
University Evaluation and Admission Test administered
by College Entrance Examination Board in Spanish or
SAT.
Admission to Graduate Program: In addition to the general prerequisites for admission
to the Graduate School of the University of Puerto Rico
at Mayagüez, the English Department requires evidence
of a candidate's undergraduate course work, or its equivalence,
in the following areas:

Introductory linguistics (3 credits)

Phonetics (3 credits)
-
The Grammar of English or the
Structure of English or English Morphology
and 'Syntax (3 credits)
-
Broad Knowledge of American literature
(3 credits)
-
Broad Knowledge of English Literature
(3 credits)
Conditional Admission: Students who lack up to 12 credits of course work
may be admitted to the program on a conditional basis.
These students are required to make up the deficiencies
by passing relevant course work during their first year
in the program.
