Our Mission

CE-PRO endeavors to achieve its role by promoting and sponsoring regular academic courses, short courses, workshops, discussion sessions, colloquia, and international congresses and conferences. It has sponsored two Inter-American congresses, in which participants from 24 nations came together to discuss the relation of technology to theoretical and practical knowledge, a well as the complex interplay between technology, politics, economics and social institutions in North, Central, and South America from a philosophical perspective.

CE-PRO fosters the consideration of the moral dimensions inherent in professional practice in business, engineering, medicine, and science. It sponsors courses on medial ethics, biomedical ethics, engineering ethics, business ethics, and agricultural ethics. At present members of the Center are developing a course on environmental ethics. The Center is also involved in several programs that promote the integration of ethics across the university curriculum.

In relation to the sciences, the goal of philosophy is to elucidate the epistemological and ontological presuppositions and implications of scientific concepts and arguments and to systematize scientific findings into a more comprehensive view of reality. It also attempts to identify the challenges that the sciences present to cultural values. With respect to technology, philosophy clarifies the implications of technological equipment, technological concepts, actions and processes. It helps to develop the critique of technological culture in relation to human traditions, science and human ideals.
