As the value of nanotechnology-enabled products
will rise from $25 billion in 2005 to $2.5 trillion in
2014, the EPA Office of Research and Development
(ORD) is carrying out highly innovative, high-risk, high-
reward research leading to critical discoveries that
will accelerate sustainability of nanomaterials. The
complexity of environmental issues, our research at
EPA on nanomaterials requires integrated and highly
transdisciplinary research combining risks assessment,
green chemistry and engineering approaches, material
and environmental sciences and computational
chemistry. ORD research activities are fundamentally
new insights related contamination of soils, sediments
and water as well as risks associated with the use of
nanoparticles for environmental remediation and the
use of nanomaterials in consumer products.
