National Research Experience for Undergraduates Program at University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez (NREUP-UPRM)

REU: Dynamics of Evolution Equations Modeling Wave Phenomena, June 29 to August 12, 2015.


 

Program Overview

The proposed Dynamics of Evolution Equations Modeling Wave Phenomena Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at UPRM is designed to attract and encourage Puerto Rican students, who have completed their fourth semester of their bachelor’s degree in mathematics (generally after they have taken Calculus III and Linear Algebra courses). The objectives of the REU include:

1. To give students a fundamental background in ordinary and partial differential equations;

2. To provide practice in applying ODEs and PDEs through mathematical modeling programs such as MATLAB and Mathematica;

3. To provide them with experience working in a group to solve a real research problem;

4. To write the results in a publishable paper;  

5. To increase their interest in graduate programs and careers in mathematics.

These objectives will be met during a 6.5 week period at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez campus through short courses in ODEs, Fourier Series, and PDEs, guest faculty lectures, GRE and technical writing workshops, designated computer lab access and assignments, and available tutoring from graduate students.

WHERE: Monzon Building, Department  of Mathematical Sciences, University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez

STIPEND: $4,200; accomodations are provided in student houses Almenares and Acacias.

ELIGIBILITY: Funding for this program comes from the National Science Foundation and National Security Agency, which have set the following requirements: (1) Participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents; (2) Participants must be enrolled in an undergraduate program.  These requirements cannot be waived.
