¡Student alert! This new semester started off with the spectacular program of national and international fine arts, known as the Cultural Agenda, of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM).

This project, which has made evident its impact in the cultural and social life of the university community and of the West, includes, on this occasion, a series of novel events. That is how members of the Committee of Cultural Promotion of the Humanities Department, doctors Anayra Santory, Laura Bravo, Rafael Jackson, Rosa Plá and Aravind E. Adyanthaya described the agenda.

As it was explained, a program created specifically for children with the intention of expanding the cultural diet of this group, will be offered. This semester is the first time that the Agenda will have a complete series of movies dedicated to children.

“Every third Saturday of every month until April, we will be offering a foreign film for children, these films have been selected by humanist professors, who will then converse with the young audiences and expose them to other codes, other realities and will show them the marvels of the cinematic world,” commented Santory.

They announced as part of these innovative offers, that they will be incorporating the residency of artists, creators, and scholars. With this, the group hopes to create an area of idleness within and outside of the University to enhance the civic and cultural life of the city by inviting artists like Arnaldo Roche, Jaime Suárez- artist of the Totem sculpture located in Old San Juan-, and Rafael Trelles.

“With each new Agenda, the program, due to the quality of its activities, continues to become more prestigious on the rest of the Island. Each time the people invited to participate in the program are more pertinent. This is important because this program doesn’t have another parallel among the other campuses on the Island,” Jackson said.

“This agenda has largely impacted the other campuses of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) and set presidency, now they are going to make a systematic agenda,” anticipated Laura Bravo, about the similar efforts being planned for the benefit of the students in all of UPR System.

This year the theatrical selections have been enriched by presentations from UPRM students, on the Island and internationally. These are not only limited to the scenic arts, it also includes dance. For example, UPRM students will present for the first time in the Yagüez Theatre on a collaborative project with Casa Cruz de la Luna entitled El Marqués de Sade le teme a la mar (The Marquis of Sade fears the sea).

“On this project we are exploring technology, the production of in screen screams, the play of the body, of the voice and how the body works with the equipment in this period in which desire is, in part, through telephone, e-mails, etc. This piece is also very important because it will be presented in Cayey and Río Piedras,” explained Adyanthaya.

Escape to the Fourth Dimension

This season the program kicked off this past Thursday, January 22, 2009 with the conference entitled, “Del punto de fuga a la cuarta dimensión: el arte y la ciencia (The Point of Escape to the Fourth Dimension),” which was presented by doctor Jackson.

This conference explores themes in relation to scientific discoveries and investigations that have contributed to art.Among them, professor Jackson mentioned the golden proportion- a geometric construction, also known as the divine proportion or the golden rule- and the fourth dimension which refers to the angular direction of space and time.

The Agenda’s calendar of activities will soon be available on the UPRM website,
