José A. Frontera Agenjo took office as the Dean of Administration of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM) during a ceremony that was carried out this past February 5, 2009 in the Student Union. The UPR Board of Trustees approved his nomination January 24, 2009 through a consultation process of the interim position that he occupied for the past six months.

“When someone officially takes office in an administrative position it’s always cause for enthusiasm, hope, and optimism. This is because, to officially take office as the Dean of Administration, it requires a lot of enthusiasm, confidence, and commitment to the country and to the University,” said UPRM chancellor, doctor Jorge Iván Vélez Arocho, moments after giving Frontera Agenjo a certificate representative of his nomination.

The Dean of Administration, who is a UPRM graduate, mentioned during his acceptance speech, that he will undertake this challenge as a way of thanking the University for the education it provided him with.

“I asked myself if in this moment of my personal and professional life it was the best step to take. However, I reminded myself that I chose to come to UPRM to work in the first place. I did it with the promise to give back to this Institution my knowledge, talent, and abilities, as limited as they may be, a little of what I have received from it: the formation of excellence, and solid professional and personal bases. If at this moment that is what the University is asking of me and needs from me, I can’t give it anything less,” said the professor of the College of Business Administration, a bit broken up.

At 30 years of age, Frontera Agenjo is the youngest Dean of Administration in the history of UPRM. This fact was brought to light in a jovial manner during a speech from the Chancellor, who remembered that when the Dean was his student, the date of his doctoral diploma caught his attention because it was the same as the Dean’s date of birth June 9, 1978.

The Dean of Administration has a bachelor’s degree from UPRM from the College of Business Administration specializing in Accounting. He has a master’s degree in International Commercial Rights from the University of Erasmus in Rotterdam, Holland. He completed his doctorate in 2003 at the University of Puerto Rico. Since October of 2003, he acted as a special aid for the Chancellor.

In concluding his acceptance speech, Frontera Agenjo said he was committed to “propel the agenda to another height, not from the present challenges, but of our own aspirations and dreams for the future.”

Víctor Siberio, Mildred Chaparro, Moisés Orengo, John Fernández Van Cleve and Ramón Vásquez, the deans of Students, Academic Affairs, Arts and Sciences, Agricultural Sciences and Engineering, respectively, were all present at the ceremony.

Rocío Zapata acted as master of ceremonies and professor Cándida González, associate dean of Administration, read Frontera Agenjo’s biographical data. Family members of the new Dean also participated in the ceremony as well as his co-workers from the Chancellor’s Office.
