From three women opposed to the standards of beauty imposed by society to an enlarged strawberry with patriotic phrases. These are example of the works of art that hang in the gallery of the Carlos E. Chardón Building at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM), where 18 students displayed their artistic talents on canvas, to demonstrate wide range of scenes and profound sentiments.

The exposition, which had its opening in the middle of April and will remain open until May 15, 2009, includes creations from the students of the Humanities Department, in its majority with concentrations in the Plastic Arts.

The pieces were judged by professors Sadot Marchani, Lydia Abreu and Maribel Soto. Initially, they were presented with a total of 80 pieces created with diverse techniques such as oil, silkscreen, sculpting and digital art among others, of which 30 were then selected to form the exhibition.

The first three places were: Duh-li, watercolor by Jason Ferrer, who painted the image of the mythic figure Salvador Dalí with his usual arrogant and defiant look; Todo sea por la belleza, ok (Everthing is for Beauty, Ok) silkscreen by Damaris Acevedo, who criticizes the standards of beauty imposed by society by illustrating three women mutilated by surgical knives; and Desbarajuste Arquitectónico (Architectonic Disorder) engraving by Frankie Negrón, who represented…. “the first of architectonic art against the utilitarianism of the actual society,” as explained by the artist.

Ferrer, Acevedo and Negrón also received the distinction that their works will be part of the prestigious Nocturne Gallery, which is celebrated the last Tuesday of each month in Mayagüez’s Plaza Colon.

The activity ended with the presentation of certificates of participation for all of the artists. The coordinator of the exposition, Antionette Figueroa, fourth year history of Art student, was also recognized. She was in charge of the exposition last year as well.

Each year students from all departments and disciplines can participate in the exhibition, which has become a tradition.
