The Department of Chemistry offers a program leading to a Master of Science Degree in Chemistry with applied research in both traditional and interdisciplinary fields of chemistry; and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree program in Applied Chemistry with cutting edge interdisciplinary research.
The department hosts a diverse and interdisciplinary number of research groups and three research centers: the Center for Protein Characterization and Function, the Center for Development of Chemical Sensors and the new Center for education and training in agricultural and related Sciences. An outreach program, Science on Wheels, is also housed within the departmental facilities.
The University of Puerto Rico is hosting its Second Symposium on Agriculture and Related Sciences. The symposium will be held at the Chemistry Building of the UPR-Mayagüez on August 11-12, 2014. The activity is sponsored by the CENTER FOR EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN AGRICULTURAL AND RELATED SCIENCES (CETARS; USDA GRANT: PRE-2011-02986). CETARS is a USDA supported research-training initiative between the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, University of Puerto Rico at Aguadilla, The University of Puerto Rico at Humacao, The Inter-American University of Puerto Rico at San German and University of Texas El Paso. CETARS mission is to strengthen collaborative research-education between Food Science, Applied Chemistry, Crops and Environmental Sciences, as well as, Engineering Science and Materials to establish and consolidate a pipeline to attract, retain and graduate talented individuals while supporting their actual placement in Agriculture-related positions.
