“Guiding, supporting, and empowering the next generation of mechanical engineers.”

The Mechdrinas Mentorship Program is an initiative of the Association of Females in Mechanical Engineering (AFIM by its spanish abreviation) at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM), created to strengthen the connection between students at different levels within the Mechanical Engineering program.

Through this program, mentorship pairs are formed between advanced-year students (“Mechdrinas”) and incoming or lower-level students (“prepas”), fostering an environment of support, personal growth, and professional development.

• Each Mechdrina (mentor) is paired with a prepa (mentee) according to their interests and goals.
• Group meetings and activities are held throughout the semester, where academic, professional, and personal well-being topics are addressed.
• AFIM offers exclusive workshops for program participants, focused on leadership, effective communication, and professional development.

The program aims to create a strong and collaborative support network where participants can:

• Share experiences, academic advice, and study strategies.
• Receive guidance on research opportunities, internships, and scholarships.
• Develop leadership and communication skills.
• Feel supported throughout their university journey.

Each mentorship relationship aims for participants to grow together, both academically and personally, promoting sisterhood and a sense of community within the department.

The Mechdrinas Mentorship Program has been key in strengthening the sense of belonging and increasing the retention of women within the Mechanical Engineering Department.

More than a program, it is a community of support and friendship that drives women to reach their full potential.
