WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF MARINE SCIENCES AT UPRM

The Department of Marine Sciences offers thesis-based M.S. and Ph.D. degrees with specialization in the areas of BiologicalChemicalGeological and Physical Oceanography. The M.S. degree requires a minimum of 29 credit units of course work and 6 credit units in thesis. The Ph.D. degree requires a minimum of 60 credit units of course work and 12 credit units for the dissertation. DMS theses are publication ready documents including one or more peer reviewed articles according to the academic program.

  • CMOG5001 - Introduction to Climate Change  - MJ-9:00-10:15
    Overview of the principles of Earth’s climate covering a broad range of phenomena that influence climate at various regional and global time scales and resolutions. Discussion of climate forced by external controls. Description of the effects of internal forces and their variability, and human- induced climate change. Emphasis on the role of greenhouse gases and rates of change of these processes. Discussion of the future climate change scenarios and possible mitigating steps.  

     
  • CMOG5002 - Introduction to Climate Change Laboratory - V-8:30-11:20
    Practical overview through laboratory exercises of the principles of Earth’s climate covering a broad range of phenomena. Practical examination of climate forced by external controls. Practical description of the effects of internal forces and their variability, and human-induced climate change. Laboratory exercises include the use of proxy data, climate modeling, and examination of climate change impacts.  

     
  • CIMA5005 - Introduction to Oceanography - MJ-2:00-3:15
    Basic knowledge, techniques, and areas of interest of the different disciplines of marine sciences. The interaction and research aims in Physical, Geological, Chemical and Biological Oceanography.  
       
  • CIMA5008 - Introduction to Oceanography Laboratory - V-1:30-4:20
    Laboratory exercises emphasizing basic knowledge, techniques, and areas of interest of the different disciplines of marine sciences and the interaction and research aims of Physical, Geological, Chemical and Biological Oceanography.

Egresado colegial publica su estudio de la Bahía Bioluminiscente de La Parguera en prestigiosa revista científica

Erick Manuel García Troche, egresado del Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM) de la Universidad de Puerto Rico (UPR), logró compartir los hallazgos de su investigación sobre la Bahía Bioluminiscente de La Parguera a través de la publicación de su artículo en la prestigiosa revista científica PLOS ONE, una plataforma de acceso abierto que busca empoderar a los investigadores para que den a conocer su trabajo de forma inmediata en vías de impulsar el progreso de la ciencia.

Graduado de bachillerato en Química y la secuencia curricular en Meteorología, en 2014, así como la maestría en Ciencias Marinas en Oceanografía Química, durante el 2020, ambos grados del RUM, el científico reiteró la inmensa satisfacción que le brinda esta meta alcanzada en su carrera.
