About
What's the problem... and how do we fix it?
01
What Are Natural Disasters?
Weather phenomena that can threaten human health, safety, property, infrastructure and security.
02
Frequency
The frequency and intensity of these natural disasters has been increasing. Ever since 1980, there have been a total of 332 natural disasters, with ~8 happening every year.
03
Economic Impact
The total cost of these disasters has been over $2 trillion. In 2021 alone, they cost the affected areas over $152 billion.
04
Impact On Our Powerlines
Thanks to natural disasters, powerlines become unstable and/or completely destroyed. This leads to small or large scale power outages that threaten the safety of civilians.
05
Our Goal
We want to create a sensor network that – in the event of a disaster – is able to detect faults in the electric grid and fix them without harming the infrastructure. We’ll achieve this through the use of a decentralized communication protocol that allows for the gathering of information about the grid even in partial fault events. The network will restore power through a distributed decision making algorithm.
Description
What is this?!
What is the Resilient Power Project?
The increasing frequency of natural disasters worldwide is having a significant impact on critical infrastructure, including electric grids. Repairing these grids after a natural disaster is a time-consuming and extensive task. Our project, in collaboration with UTEP, has the goal of creating a network of sensors that is able to detect faults in the electric grid in the event of natural disasters and fix the specific problem, while keeping the rest of the infrastructure safe. We plan to achieve this through the use of a decentralized communication protocol, which allows for information about the grid to be uninterrupted in the event of a partial fault. The network will be able to restore power after a natural phenomenon by using a distributed decision-making algorithm. Aside from the network, the system has other components like Blockchain, Edge Computing, and Replicated Databases.
