ECAFSS Summer Camps 2018

During June 2018, approximately 75 Middle and High school students from the western and southern regions of PR participated of two simultaneous summer camps experiences. The 2018 Agro-Science Summer Camp at UPR Mayaguez campus, addressed to students of the western region of the island, was intended to impact students from 9th to 12th grade. They had hands-on experiences in diverse disciplines related to food security and safety such as: plant pathology, entomology, food microbiology, bio- and nanotechnology and forestry. The 2018 BioScience Summer Camp at PCUPR Ponce campus received high school students from the southern region of the island. At the Biotechnology Center (CEIBA), high school students will conduct experiments in topics such as: plant tissue culture techniques, plant’s DNA extraction, food testing for Salmonella, water testing for bacteria followed by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and agarose gel electrophoresis, introduction to bioinformatics using BLAST, among others. Students also visited Corteva AgriScience (before DuPont & Pioneer), Syngenta and Monsanto agroindustries.
