Our dear colleague and friend Dr. Elizabeth Dayton has passed away.

Here is the obituary prepared by her family.

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of  Elizabeth Pine Dayton on May 21, 2018. Born on November 7, 1951 in Washington DC,  Liz, was “Buff”  before she was Liz.  Buff  was raised in Los Angeles where she attended Marlborough High School and she received her BA  from UC, Berkeley where she discovered her passion for linguistics, going on to study with Bill Labov at the University of Pennsylvania and writing her PhD thesis, titled “Grammatical Categories of the Verb in African-American Vernacular English.”

For much of her adult life, Liz was Professor of Linguistics at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaquez.

Liz was a beloved friend, sister, teacher, and aunt; she was always available for a conversation, for a walk, or for a friendly chat over coffee. Liz was sweet, kind, funny and a good friend. She struggled valiantly to teach French to her cat, Charlotte.

We were blessed to have had Liz with us for almost a year after her initial diagnosis of ovarian cancer and for that we are grateful.

Funeral services and reception will be held on Friday, June 1st at 11AM at Holy Cross Mortuary Chapel and Cemetery, 5835 W. Slauson Ave. Culver City  90230.
