Dr. Rosa I. Roman Perez

Dr. Rosa I. Roman Perez is a full professor at UPR, Mayaguez where she has worked since 1990. She completed a Masters of Arts in English Education in 1999 and earned a Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction at Penn State University in 2007. Dr. Roman teaches upper-undergraduate and graduate TESL courses and works with graduate thesis research. She has chaired 16 successful theses and collaborated in 24 graduate committees either as a reader or representative of the Office of Graduate Studies. Her experiences include the accreditation of the English Department by NCTE and work as editor and translator for UPRM’s NCATE and CAEP accreditations. As an adjunct in the Teacher Preparation Program, she teaches the Methodology of Teaching English and supervises student practice at the Secondary Level. She also collaborated in projects with teachers like AforMAR 1, 2, and 3; mNET (Mobilizing National Educator Talent) a project with Ohio State University and other 14 institutions in the US; and in the initiative of the DEPR and UPRM Project Based Learning initiative with Social Science teachers in Puerto Rico.

Marien Villanueva

Prof. Marién Villanueva Vega is an Adjunct Professor of English at UPR, Mayagüez where she has worked since 2019. She is currently a candidate for a Ph.D. with a specialization in the languages, literatures, and cultures of the English-speaking Caribbean. She completed a Master of Arts in English Education in 2012. Prof. Villanueva has been teaching Basic English (INGL 3101-02), writing at the basic and intermediate level (INGL 3201-02, INGL 3103-04), literature (INGL 3221), and conversational courses (INCO 3006, INCO 4055, INCO 4006) at UPR and Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. She has collaborated in 2 graduate committees as a reader and as a representative of the Office of Graduate Studies respectively. She has worked as the Coordinator of Undergraduate Academic Counseling at UPR, Mayagüez. As an adjunct in the Teacher Preparation Program, she has supervised student practice at the Secondary Level (EDPE 4246). Her experiences include the supervision of the educational program of one of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico where she coordinated the educational services and support for children and young adults with low academic achievements who live in high-risk communities. As an educator with a teaching certificate she has worked as an elementary school teacher in private and public schools of Puerto Rico. She is currently sponsoring various projects: Revamping the Department Webpage, offering the Advanced English Placement Test for incoming students, creating New Basic English In-House Laboratory Modules, and upgrading several working spaces in the English Department.

Alberto Cruz

Luis Alberto Cruz Martin currently works for the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus as the Coordinator of Technical Services of the ETC & Language Laboratory in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He works in accordance with the English Department’s Strategic Plan, which incorporates teaching, research, and use of new technology to comply with the mission of the Department.

Sheila M. Cancel Cancel

Sheila M. Cancel is a graduate from the Business Administration Department at the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez. She is the English Department’s Administrative Secretary and joined our team in August 2019. Once you visit the Department, she is the first smile to greet you. She will guide you through your inquiries and every academic procedure with a friendly attitude and almost always will have an answer to your questions.

Isabel Padilla Carlo

Isabel Padilla is an undergraduate student in the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez currently studying English Literature. She forms part of the Administrative Staff as a work-study employee in charge of managing the English Department’s website. Aside from that, she’s a member of Sábanas Bilingual Literary Magazine working as an editor, social media manager, and event planner.
