Sustainability Engineering Scholarship

ISOS Scholarship and Camp

As part of an initiative at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, a series of courses in Sustainability Engineering (ISOS) are being developed. We are looking for students who are enthusiastic about this topic, want to take the courses and at the same time participate in other related activities. We offer a scholarship and mentoring to complete these courses and activities. Students with interest should check that they meet the requirements, which include (1) having admission as a first-year student in Engineering at the RUM by August 2024, (2) availability to participate in a camp this summer and (3) availability to complete a pre-engineering course this summer (or convalidate a previously taken course). The application process begins by filling out this form. This opportunity is part of a grant from the National Science Foundation Grant. The application deadline is March 28, 2025. Please direct questions and submit required documents to isos@uprm.edu.

The student’s commitment to be part of this opportunity includes:

  • Be admitted as a first-year student of the Engineering degree at the RUM by August 2025;
  • Participate in the summer camp July 14-19, 2025;
  • Complete a pre-engineering course with a grade of at least B before enrolling in August 2025 (or convalidate a previously taken course);
  • Complete the “Creating a Sustainable World” course in August 2025;
  • Complete a seminar directed to the cohort in spring or summer 2025;
  • Complete a semester of Coop research or practical experience with a partner organization;
  • Complete three ISOS-related elective courses;
  • Work with mentors through a Community of Practice;
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.50.

Benefits of the opportunity include a scholarship to (1) cover the costs of the Summer Camp, (2) cover the fees for the pre-engineering course and the “This is Engineering” course, and (3) provide a stipend of $1,500 per participate in a research or practical project in one of the project’s collaborating companies later in your studies (for this you must enroll in a course that will be defined later).

Your application for this opportunity indicates your intention to complete all program requirements. Failure to comply with the requirements may cause the suspension or cancellation of financial aid.

The application form is here, and the deadline is March 28, 2025.

Important Notice: Although we are planning this opportunity for 2025, due to recent orders of the Federal Government, the terms of this opportunity are subject to change if mandated by the National Science Foundation. We will provide updates as new information is available.
