Resources for planning activites involving animals at UPRM

Principal investigators planning activities involving non-human vertebrates are encouraged to consult the following resources:

National Research Council. 2011. Guide for the care and use of laboratory animals, 8th edition. National Academies Press, Washington, DC. 218 pages.

Anderson K, et al. 2020. Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research and Teaching, Fourth Edition. Eds Tucker CB, MacNeil MD, Webster AB. American Dairy Science Association, American Society of Animal Science, Poultry Science Association. 216 pages.

UPRM faculty, staff and students can complete courses relating to animal care and use and receive certification through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program) (citiprogram.org). Use the upr.edu email credentials to log in. CITI courses can be credited toward OEGPR (Ética Gubernamental) training requirements.

IACUC protocol

Points to keep in mind:

Principal investigators at the University of Puerto Mayaguez contemplating research involving non-human vertebrate animals should download, fill in and sign the form below, and email it to iacuc@uprm.edu.

Activities involving animals should not be initiated until approved by the IACUC.

All sections of the form should be filled out.

The protocol should establish that the proposed activities minimize harm to animals and that they do not unnecessarily duplicate previous research.

The protocol should assume non-technical readership – the IACUC includes scientists and non-scientists.

In addition to other information specifically required in the protocol, the document should also describe:

  • where and when the activities involving animals will occur.
  • species involved.
  • number of individuals in each species.
  • housing infrastructure (e.g., aquaria, pens, cages, etc.) and density of animals in these areas.
  • animal husbandry (routine feeding and care).
  • training of personnel.

The protocol should state if the proposed activities are externally funded and if so, by which funding agency, and the status of this funding (proposal planned, submitted, conditionally approved, approved etc., with relevant deadlines).
