In Norway: A devastating landslide wiped out eight seaside homes in the north

“A devastating landslide razed eight houses by the sea in northern Norway. One person was evacuated from a property. There were no fatal nor injured victims. The detachment of a piece of land more than 600 meters wide and 150 meters high occurred in the municipality of Alta on Wednesday afternoon. Police were notified of the incident at 3:45 p.m. m., and immediately began an air and sea rescue operation. One person managed to record the avalanche with a camera. The video shows how the land gradually gives way, then more violently, and moves to the sea.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71LMxAxkTX0&feature=youtu.be

Guide for Resilient Community Center Design in Island Communities

The Resilient Community Center guide is a response to the need to design community centers with the capacity to face climate, social, and economic changes. At the same time, serve as community educational and socio-economic development centers throughout the year. This duality of being prepared for an emergency, but also being relevant and active throughout the year, is of great importance to ensure, year after year, the community increases its organizational capacity to make positive changes. This guide is an expansion to the Community Engagement chapter published in ‘Keep Safe, A Guide for Resilient Housing Design in Island Communities’. The…

Earthquakes of the Caribbean: 1918 – 2019

The M6.0 earthquake that occurred near Puerto Rico on September 24, 2019, was the largest earthquake to strike the U.S. territory in five years. It was not, however, the largest recorded earthquake there. That distinction goes to the July 7, 1943, M7.7 earthquake that thankfully did not generate a tsunami. Other earthquakes, and sometimes the landslides they cause, have produced tsunamis throughout the Caribbean Sea region, including one in Puerto Rico in 1918. Therefore this animation begins in 1918 and covers the 101 years up until the present day to show all of the recorded seismic activity in this region…

UPRM/CRC focus on greater diversity in STEM/HSE

The Coastal Resilience Center (CRC) is committed to increasing the representation of minority groups in the Homeland Security Enterprise (HSE), in emergency management, planning and engineering fields. To meet this goal, the CRC is partnering with four Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) to create undergraduate and graduate programs to improve access to the education needed to pursue careers in these fields. Prof. Ismael Pagán-Trinidad of the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez discusses the school’s engineering program and involvement with the CRC.
