General Description:

Surface-active particles adhere to the oil/water interface and lower the interfacial tension of the system, this property is essential in the preparation of soft materials such as emulsions. Although gold nanoparticles are naturally hydrophobic, the particles are made amphiphilic and gain surface-active properties when functionalized with polar and nonpolar terminated thiols. Amphiphilic gold nanoparticles reduce the interfacial tension between water and oil by reducing the area of contact between the liquids. The magnitude of the reduction in interfacial tension as well as the arrangement of the particles at the interface depend on the surface chemistry of the gold nanoparticles surface.
