General Description: A historiographic approach aided by Critical Race and Feminist theories, was employed in the process of understanding how we arrived at postblack art. As Critical Race theory provides the framework for the analysis of the relationship between society, culture and race, it was especially helpful in the examination of the ‘60s and ‘70s Black Arts Movement and its relationship with Second Wave Feminism. Feminist theories highlighted the crucial roles and diverse experiences of black women and other minorities within those movements—historically, underrepresented in mainstream discussions. Throughout this discussion, we have traced some historical antecedents of post-black thought. We have also revisited active and transcendent endeavors towards changing visual culture’s perception of blackness.
