General Description
OCEANOS is a 4-years project (2022-2025) that aims at closing the gap between
NASA technologies and underrepresented minorities by providing training
opportunities to Hispanic/Latinos (i.e., Puerto Rican) students through Summer
internship experiences focused on NASA EO, remote sensing, ocean color and
coastal ecosystems characterization led by a network of Puerto Rican subject
matter experts. The project’s main goal is to improve capacity and awareness
among Hispanic/Latino students on the availability of NASA EO for ocean color
and coastal parameters. As such, this project has three main objectives: 1) To
capacitate low-income Hispanic/Latino high schoolers and first-generation
university undergraduates on ocean color data acquisition and analysis with
remotely-sensed freely-available imagery, 2) To improve, at a minimum by
two-fold and measured by a series of surveys/questionnaires, the scientific
literacy among Hispanic/Latino students, particularly on the combined used of
in situ and remotely-sensed data for ocean studies, and 3) To aid in the
dissemination of Science Mission Directorate (SMD) assets among the fastest
growing underrepresented group of the United States.
