Our Material Science and Engineering Clubs consists of fifteen (15) participating schools, mainly from the west side of Puerto Rico.

Our Outreach program provides at least two (2) visits per school each semester to demonstrate concepts related to material science and nanotechnology. The presented material is delivered through educational modules and interactive demonstrations, which meet the established standards in science and engineering mandated by the Puerto Rico Department of Education.
2017-2018 Activities
Community Work
After hurricane María, category 5 on September 20th, there was a lot of work to be done in the communities. Many of them needed access to water, food, cleansing of debris, and some of the just wanted a helping hand or conversation. Community work for the UPRM-CREST staff and student volunteers was granted with the Municipality of Mayagüez, U.S. Army, and Police from October – December 2017.
MaAd NanoDay Celebration
The Material Advantage UPRM Chapter student association invited CREST to participate in this NanoDay Celebration event with interactive demonstrations. Over 70 students from the island of Puerto Rico participated in these demonstrations and several seminars on December 16, 2017 in the Museo de Arte UPRM (MUSA).
PR STEM’s up to the Challenge
PR STEM is an activity designed to impact over 5,000 middle and high school students. The activity took place on at the Dr. Pedro Roselló’s Convention Center on March 6 and 7. Interactive demonstrations were presented as well as a thorough orientation on UPRM’s engineering program by our staff and student participants.
College Fair
The Materials Science and Engineering graduate program and CREST participated at the UPR Mayaguez Campus College Fair on March 13th. Also, both programs participated in the UPR Rio Piedras College Fair on March 15th. High school and college students participated in these activities.
2018 Summer Camp and Teacher Investigation Program
Six high school students and up to six middle and high school teachers will be able to participate in this years Summer Camp and Investigation Program. For the period of four weeks, students and teachers will be participating in workshops, seminars, poster presentations, investigations, and nano demonstrations on Campus. These activities count with the collaboration of CREST professors and students, whom will serve as mentors.
At the end of the four weeks it is expected that participant students and teachers prepare a final presentation with the results of their investigation.
Summer Camp and Investigation Program: June 11th – July 6th 2018
