Physics Undergraduate Program

Courses

The Department of Physics offers Bachelor of Science degree programs in Physics and in Physical Sciences, and a Master of Science program in Physics. We also offer Curricular Sequences in Atmospheric Physics/Meteorology, Astronomy and Physics. The Bachelor of Science program in Physics is a traditional program designed for students who wish to obtain a solid background in the field. It prepares students to work in government and private laboratories, to pursue graduate work in physics or to teach physics at the secondary level if additional courses in education are taken to obtain the teacher’s license required by the Department of Education. This program is recommended to students who would like to pursue a career in Physics.

The Bachelor of Science Program in Physical Sciences is directed specifically to the preparation of secondary school teachers in the physical sciences. The program includes most of the courses in education required for certification by the Department of Education. However, it can also be used by students who do not want to make a commitment to any of the traditional fields of study in the physical sciences and require a broader preparation in general science. A wide variety of subjects can be chosen by students to fulfill free electives requirements. These include traditional choices from mathematics, chemistry, geology, computer sciences, arts and humanities and non-traditional selections from business, biology, education and engineering.

Curricular sequences

The curricular sequence in Atmospheric Physics/Meteorology provides formal training that would allow students to pursue a career in meteorology and related fields. The curriculum covers all the fundamental topics required for graduate studies or a career as an operational meteorologist.

The curricular sequence in Astronomy prepares students for a variety of future studies and work experiences. One aim is to prepare students to pursue a graduate degree in astronomy and astrophysics. The courses in the curriculum will provide a solid knowledge base and help in deciding which specific field to enter.

The curricular sequence in Physics provides a structured alternative for students of other specializations who wish to deepen their knowledge of Physics, whether to strengthen their professional preparation or for personal interest.

Societies

Society of Physics Students (SPS)

The Society of Physics Students (SPS) Mayagüez Chapter is a professional association of students from the University of Puerto Rico who share a common interest in physics. It is composed not only of undergraduate and graduate students and faculty from the department, but also of students from other departments and concentrations. Its purpose is to expand knowledge of the branches of physics for both its members and the general public. Additionally, they contribute to the dissemination of physics by organizing various activities throughout the year, including demonstrations and lectures at schools, universities, and the broader community.

Sociedad Meteorológica de Puerto Rico (SMPR)

Our Society was founded on April 19, 2006, with the purpose of promoting meteorology as a field of study at the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez Campus (RUM).Since then, it has grown tremendously, organizing a series of activities aimed at everyone interested in Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology.

Optical Society of America (OSA)

The Optical Society of America (OSA) Mayagüez Chapter is a professional association of students from the University of Puerto Rico who share a common interest in optics. It is composed not only of undergraduate and graduate students and faculty, but also of students from other departments and concentrations. Its purpose is to expand knowledge of the sciences, particularly optics and photonics, for both its members and the general public. Additionally, they contribute to the dissemination of physics by organizing various activities throughout the year, including demonstrations and lectures at schools, universities, and the broader community.

Women in Physics (WIP)

Women in Physics is an association dedicated to increasing the representation of women in the field of physics and supporting those interested in the discipline. Our goal is to provide an enriching environment that allows women to thrive both professionally and socially. We believe in the potential of every woman to achieve significant advancements in physics, and we are committed to providing the necessary support to make this a reality. The association is not only made up of physics students, but it is also open to anyone interested in the field, regardless of their specialty. For the benefit of our members, we organize various activities, such as professional workshops, social events, talks, and demonstrations in schools, among others.
