Omar Jiménez is an undergraduate student at the UPRM who is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering while being a professional musician and enjoying his occasional movie. He participated in two summer internships and will be doing outstanding things this following summer!

Omar A. Jiménez is an undergraduate student at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus who is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering. Omar joined PREM six months ago and is working in IRT 3 with Dr. Ubaldo Córdova. His work at the UPRM focuses on the use of theoretical and computational tools for chemical and material research. His study strives to understand the diffusive motion of colloidal particles embedded in active materials and how it is in turn affected by particle interactions. “Theoretical studies of active matter are essential to understanding many biological systems and processes (e.g. modeling the interior of a cell) as well as informing experimentalists crucial design parameters for the synthesis of artificial active (smart) materials.” – Omar Jiménez.

Although Omar is a hardworking student, he is also a professional musician, and during his free time, he enjoys watching movies, reading, listening to music and watching sports.
During his bachelor’s degree, Omar participated in two summer internships at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Wisconsin-Madison working in projects using molecular simulations and Machine Learning techniques. This summer he will be attending Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) to work on a collaborative project on the use of Machine Learning to develop surrogate models that accelerate quantum chemical calculations for catalyst design and discovery.

Omar’s goal is to pursue a graduate degree and to combine his background in computer science, particularly in Artificial Intelligence. “I think has the potential of truly revolutionizing chemical and materials engineering as we know it, as it has already done with many other areas (e.g. image recognition, translation, autonomous driving).” – Omar Jiménez.

Omar is an overachieving student who strongly believes that PREM offers a unique opportunity to surround yourself with professional researchers in a community that shares a passion for scientific research and education.
