Student Success Indicators
At the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, we are committed to the optimal performance of our students. The University uses various criteria to assess student performance, including retention, graduation, and placement rates.

Retention rate
Retention rates are used to indicate student success, as they identify to what extent students who enter their first year successfully transition from high school to University, completing their first year and returning for their second year. As shown in the following table, in 2021, 83.36% of students who entered University returned for their second year, while in the 2022 cohort, the percentage was 84.27%. Regarding returning to the specific program, in the 2021 cohort, 76.08% returned, while in the 2022 cohort, this percentage was 76.46%.

Graduation rate
The graduation rate indicates the extent to which first-year students successfully achieve their educational goals at the university by obtaining a bachelor’s degree within 150% of the expected time. Since we have programs projected for five years, the rate is calculated at 7.5 years. The table below shows that for students who entered in 2015, the graduation rate at RUM was 54.60%, while for students who entered in 2016, the rate was 48.59%.

After graduation
The University also measures student performance in terms of how successful students are in fulfilling their graduate plans.
Employment Results
The University’s objective is that most of its graduates successfully fulfill their post-graduate plans. The average placement rate for the past eight years has been 69.34% at graduation and 85.85% six months after graduation, excluding pandemic-affected 2019-2020 results. For students graduating in 2021, the placement rate was 73.92%, and for 2022 graduates, the rate was 67.99%. 88.36% of the graduates in the class of 2021 had employment in an area related to their field of study at the time of graduation, while this figure was 86.57% for the class of 2022.
