Collaboration and Strategic Action Plans
“Caminante, no hay camino,
se hace camino al andar.” Antonio Machado
The advancement of science requires collaboration. Collaboration is a process in which two or more individuals create new value.
The advancement of science also requires careful planning of experiments. Researchers need to constantly address two questions: “where are we going?” and “how will we get there?: These questions must be addressed in research proposals which require plans, objectives, milestones, and deliverables. The budget justification and the scope of work need to answer “how will we get there?”. Research proposals also require a plan B, and the capability of making adjustments along the way. A carefully prepared plan and proposal inspires the trust of the funding agency. Planning is an essential component of research.
The planning skills of researchers can used to develop a Strategic Action Plan for an organization. Strategic Doing can be used as a method that enables people to form action-oriented collaborations quickly, move them toward measurable outcomes, and make adjustments along the way [1]. Strategic Doing will be discussed in this seminar.
The objective of this seminar is to bring forth the following messages:
- collaboration requires an emotional commitment and trust
- most strategic plans fail, but a successful strategic action plan can be developed through collaboration
- Researchers need to develop as strategic planners
- The future of the Chemistry Department depends on collaborations.
