Women Coffee Harvesters: Protagonists in the History of Coffee in Puerto Rico
Andrés Octavo’s photography exhibit was first shown in October 2024 as part of events associated with the Climates of Inequality Exhibition.
The photos taken by Octavo are part of a collaborative project between the OHL and Centro de Apoyo Mutuo Jíbaro-Bartolo (CAMJI-Bartolo) funded by a grant from the American Council of Learned Societies. The project features oral history interviews with women coffee growers and this exhibit showcases Octavo’s photography of the women who cultivate and collect coffee, the coffee trees, and the coffee bean collection baskets and sacks.
The photo to the right is of Gesellie “Chela” Caraballo Ruiz and was part of the exhibition and was also selected for the cover of the Spring 2025 cover of the Oral History Journal, the journal of the Oral History Society.

Recolectoras del Cafetal: Protagonistas en la historia del café de Puerto Rico
La exposición fotográfica de Andrés Octavo se presentó por primera vez en octubre de 2024 como parte de los eventos asociados con la Exposición Climates of Inequality.
Las fotos tomadas por Octavo forman parte de un proyecto colaborativo entre la OHL y el Centro de Apoyo Mutuo Jíbaro-Bartolo (CAMJI-Bartolo), financiado por una beca del American Council of Learned Societies. El proyecto incluye entrevistas de historia oral con mujeres caficultoras y esta exposición muestra la fotografía de Octavo de las mujeres que cultivan y recolectan café, los cafetos y las canastas y sacos de recolección de granos.
La foto de la derecha es de Gesellie “Chela” Caraballo Ruiz y fue parte de la exposición y fue seleccionada para la portada de la edición de primavera de 2025 de la Oral History Journal, la revista de la Oral History Society.
