Minor Concentrations of the College of Business Administration

The minor concentrations offered by ADEM provide students from all faculties at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, the opportunity to acquire basic knowledge related to the different programs of study in the College of Business Administration. This knowledge will allow them to broaden their professional horizons and develop awareness of the business world.

TO APPLY:

  • You must complete and pay for the Minor Concentration and/or Curriculum Sequence application.
  • Visit the following link to fill out the application – solicitud.upr.edu
  • If you have not used this platform before:
    • Create an account on the platform using your UPR credentials.
  • If you have already used this platform to apply for admission to UPR, log in with your email and password.

  • VERIFY – go to Settings and select that you have prior studies at the institution.
    Only if this option is checked will you see the application section.

  • Select the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, the application you wish to submit, and the academic term.

  • Fill out the required information in each section of the application and save.

  • Make the payment on the platform and submit the application.

  • The response will be available on the platform as soon as it is reviewed by the relevant offices.

  • The system does NOT send emails with the decision.

  • Keep checking the same platform where you applied.

Applications will be evaluated subject to space availability. Applications submitted after the last day established in the Academic Calendar for late admission to minor concentrations will not be evaluated.   • Download and save the acceptance letter.
  • You should familiarize yourself with the courses in the minor concentration, when they are offered, the sequence in which they should be taken, and their prerequisites.

TO ENROLL IN MINOR CONCENTRATION COURSES:

  • The student must have been admitted to the concentration.
  • Try to enroll in the course on your own.
  • If the registration system does not allow it, request assistance from the department to which you belong.Whenever you submit a ticket on the platform at ajustes.uprm.edu, be sure to include the acceptance letter for the minor concentration.

WHAT EVIDENCE DO I HAVE THAT I COMPLETED THE MINOR CONCENTRATION?

After graduation, the Registrar’s Office will verify that you have passed all the required courses and will certify this with an annotation on your transcript. Request a transcript and verify that it contains the annotation that you completed the minor concentration. If it does not, contact the Registrar’s Office.

MINOR CONCENTRATIONS

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

Students who successfully complete this Minor Concentration will be able to:

  • Describe the basic principles of management: managerial functions, identify the skills, knowledge, and abilities required to be an effective manager, and describe the social and ethical environment of management.

  • Discuss the marketing process, explain consumer behavior, discuss the relationship between markets and society, as well as apply practices of social responsibility and ethics in marketing.

  • Understand the accounting cycle and the preparation of financial statements.

  • Understand the basic processes in managing human resources in a public or private company.

Students of ADOF – Office Administration – cannot take this minor concentration as their curriculum includes several of these courses.

OFFICE ASSISTANT

Students who successfully complete this Minor Concentration will be able to:

  • Operate high-tech office machinery in information technology.
  • Type using the correct touch-typing techniques.
  • Create office documents.
  • Process and manage records using accepted techniques.
  • Develop procedures to efficiently manage office processes.
  • Acquire basic knowledge to handle word processing programs.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

The philosophy of this Minor Concentration is to prepare students at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, with the appropriate skills for establishing their own business.

Students who successfully complete this Minor Concentration will be able to:

  • Identify opportunities to create products or services that lead to the establishment of new businesses.
  • Innovate and create products, services, and ideas that can be developed into businesses.
  • Critically analyze all decision-making elements and the information that should be considered before starting a new business to determine its potential viability.
  • Explain the importance of and develop a comprehensive business plan for establishing and developing a small or medium-sized business in Puerto Rico.
  • Explain how to obtain and use the financial resources necessary for establishing and developing a business.
  • Incorporate analytical and innovative techniques, analyze how environmental changes affect the business, and evaluate the mechanisms for adjustment, adaptation, and growth.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Students who successfully complete this Minor Concentration will be able to:

  • Explain the strategic importance of project management for contemporary organizations.

  • Compare the different types of organizational structures available to manage projects.

  • Develop the project plan.

  • Recognize key aspects of budgeting, management, and control within the context of a project.

  • Recognize how internal and external environmental factors influence the success of a project.

  • Recognize the importance of follow-up, control, auditing, and project termination activities in the continuous improvement process of project management.

  • Apply schedules to project planning, management, and control.

  • Apply best project management practices to their respective areas of study through project management.

Business Administration Students

Students of Arts and Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, and Engineering

ACCOUNTING

Students who successfully complete this Minor Concentration will be able to:

  • Understand with greater rigor the processes of recording, summarizing, disseminating, and analyzing financial information within organizations.
  • Ensure compliance with fiscal responsibility by understanding the tax systems of Puerto Rico or the United States.

FINANCE

Students who successfully complete this Minor Concentration will be able to:

  • Provide the theories that allow graduates to understand the operation of our macroeconomic environment, the creation and management of money, and financial markets.

  • Manage the financial affairs of both private companies and the public sector.

  • Understand the role of financial institutions and trends in the securities market.

OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

Students who successfully complete this Minor Concentration will be able to:

  • Properly manage inventory within companies.
  • Control quality in manufacturing processes or service delivery.
  • Determine the amount of material that should be purchased for the manufacturing process while keeping costs as low as possible.
  • Determine product demand in the market, as well as the resources needed to provide excellent service to consumers.

HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

Students who successfully complete this Minor Concentration will be able to:

  • Make recommendations that impact the design of an organization’s structure.
  • Create and manage compensation and benefits structures in both private and public companies.
  • Collaborate in the development and formulation of policies and other aspects in the Human Resources area aligned with the organization’s strategic plan.

MARKETING

Students who successfully complete this Minor Concentration will be able to:

  • Acquire the necessary skills to study and understand consumers in both local and international markets.

  • Understand consumer behavior to make decisions related to the product, its price, promotion strategies, and distribution.

COMPUTERIZED INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Students who successfully complete this Minor Concentration will be able to:

  • Describe the importance of information systems, their relationship with the structure of an organization, and how information systems support various business functions.

  • Analyze, design, and develop computer applications to meet business needs.

  • Use tools and techniques from the systems development life cycle.

  • Develop the ability to be self-taught in order to learn and apply new technologies to the work environment.
