The Oral History Lab is pleased to announce that the RUM library has installed a bilingual children’s book exhibition. This will be available at the main entrance of the UPRM library and will be available from Monday, September 5th, 2022, until Monday, October 31st, 2022. The exhibition has been under work since 2019, but COVID-19 derailed the project. Despite this setback, the project persevered and it is a great pride to see it come to fruition after all these years.
The exhibition and book, Maxy Survives the Hurricane/Maxy Survives the Hurricane, were created in response to the many problems Puerto Rican children faced with trauma after Hurricane Maria. This project was inspired by an especially moving oral story that was recorded with a Head Start teacher in Ponce, Rosa Ivelisse Bennazar Alcover. She mentioned that “after the hurricane, when I came to meet my students, they said to me, ‘Teacher, I lost my house. Teacher, we have no food. Teacher, what should we do? ””
After hearing this, graduate student, Yarelis Marcial Acevedo, and, professor, Dr. Ricia Chansky began to work on the children’s book and are happy to see how their work could help parents, teachers, and students alike cope with difficult times.
A smaller version of this exhibition will also be installed at the Mayagüez Youth Library and additional resources are posted on the Mi María project website.
El Laboratorio de Historia Oral se complace en anunciar que la biblioteca de la UPR Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez ha instalado una exposición bilingüe de libros infantiles. Esta estará disponible en la entrada principal de la biblioteca de la UPRM desde el lunes, 5 de septiembre de 2022, hasta el lunes, 31 de octubre de 2022. La exposición ha estado en proceso desde el 2019, pero el COVID-19 desvió el proyecto. A pesar de este contratiempo, el proyecto perseveró y es un gran orgullo verlo completado después de todos estos años.
La exposición y el libro, Maxy Survives the Hurricane/Maxy sobrevive el huracán, fueron creados en respuesta a los muchos problemas que enfrentaron los niños puertorriqueños con el trauma después del Huracán María. Este proyecto fue inspirado por una historia oral particularmente conmovedora que fue grabada con una maestra de Head Start en Ponce, Rosa Ivelisse Bennazar Alcover. Ella mencionó que “después del huracán, cuando vine a encontrarme con mis estudiantes, me decían, ‘Maestra, perdí mi casa. Maestra, no tenemos comida. Maestra, ¿qué debemos hacer?'”
Al escuchar esto, la estudiante graduada, Yarelis Marcial Acevedo, y la profesora, Dra. Ricia Chansky, comenzaron a trabajar en el libro infantil y están felices de ver cómo su trabajo podría ayudar a padres, maestros y estudiantes por igual a confrontar tiempos difíciles.
Una versión más pequeña de esta exposición también se instalará en la Biblioteca Juvenil de Mayagüez y recursos adicionales se publicarán en el sitio web del proyecto Mi María.
“We developed the idea for this exhibition in a course related to narratives of surviving Hurricane Maria that I taught in 2019. The need for physical distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic derailed our plans to mount the exhibit in the university library, much to our disappointment. We really believe that we crafted something that addresses the needs of children and young people in Puerto Rico who have survived so much in the last years. Being able to share this work now—especially during the passage of Fiona—is a wonderful feeling, especially as we are opening the new Oral History Lab dedicated to helping others through storytelling.”

“Desarrollamos la idea para esta exposición en un curso relacionado con las narrativas de supervivencia del Huracán María que impartí en 2019. La necesidad de distanciamiento social durante la pandemia de COVID-19 descarriló nuestros planes de montar la exposición en la biblioteca universitaria, lo cual fue muy decepcionante para nosotros. Realmente creemos que hemos creado algo que aborda las necesidades de los niños y jóvenes en Puerto Rico que han sobrevivido tanto en los últimos años. Poder compartir este trabajo ahora —especialmente durante el paso de Fiona— es una sensación maravillosa, especialmente porque estamos inaugurando el nuevo Laboratorio de Historia Oral dedicado a ayudar a otros a través de la narración de historias.”
“Setting up the exhibit was very emotional for me because, after many years of waiting and the obstacles we had to face, we could see all of our hard work coming together right in front of us. I remember that when we were setting up the exhibit in the UPRM library, I felt excited but extremely nervous because I did not know whether people would feel drawn to take a look. However, once I was able to witness students stopping by and some leaving their comments, I was filled with an amazing feeling that I could not and still cannot put into words.”

“Montar la exposición fue muy emocionante para mí porque, después de muchos años de espera y los obstáculos que tuvimos que enfrentar, pudimos ver cómo todo nuestro arduo trabajo se unía justo delante de nosotros. Recuerdo que cuando estábamos montando la exhibición en la biblioteca de la UPRM, me sentía emocionada pero extremadamente nerviosa porque no sabía si a la gente le interesaría echar un vistazo. Sin embargo, una vez que pude ver a los estudiantes deteniéndose y algunos dejando sus comentarios, me llené de una sensación increíble que no podía y aún no puedo expresar con palabras.”
