Admission to the Doctoral Program in Tropical Agriculture
The admission of students to the doctoral program will comply with the general requirements established by the regulations of graduate studies at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus (Certification 09-09, as amended: link to certification).
Admission Requirements
Academic Background:

- Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Sciences or a related field.
- It is recommended that applicants hold a master’s degree from an accredited university in:
- Sciences
- Agriculture
- Environmental Sciences
- General Science
- Chemistry
- Biology
Grade Point Average (GPA):
-
- Minimum GPA of 3.25 in science courses.
- Minimum GPA of 3.00 in courses from other disciplines.
Required Credits:

- At least 9 credits in Agricultural Sciences-related courses (e.g., General Agriculture, Animal Sciences, Agronomy, Soil Sciences, Plant Science, Horticulture, Crop Protection).
- At least 3 credits in Biostatistics or equivalent courses.
Deficiency Courses:

- Students may be accepted with a maximum of 4 deficiency courses and will be encouraged to fulfill these requirements through professional development.
Required Documentation:

- A 2-page CV.
- A short essay (maximum 1,000 words) including:
- Short- and long-term goals.
- Research experience and interests.
- Potential contributions of research goals to promote Tropical Agriculture.
Language Proficiency:

- Adequate proficiency in both Spanish and English, in oral and written forms, is expected.
Evaluation Process
- The Graduate Committee (GC) will assess compliance with these general requirements along with a face-to-face interview with the applicant.
- The GC may recommend conditional admission if all requirements are not fulfilled.
Admission Conditions
- All admissions will be subject to the availability of an advisor and funds to support the research.
