Project Overview

The Food Security Data Center seeks to improve the understanding of food security in Puerto Rico
through the integration of data from BRFSS, ACS, the U.S. Census Foreign Trade Division (FTD),
and USDA FoodData Central (FDC). The project develops publicly accessible databases and
interactive applications designed to support students, researchers, policymakers, and the
general public.

The information generated through these tools can also be applied to other island territories
facing similar environmental disruptions and high dependence on imported foods. In addition,
the project maintains a free online repository of research conducted by investigators at the
University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez.

Project Objectives

  • Develop online database skills for researchers and graduate students.
  • Acquire equipment for the creation and management of online databases.
  • Create a website containing databases and interactive food security applications.
  • Provide datasets that support research, education, and academic training.

Centro de Datos sobre Seguridad Alimentaria

Investigación, datos y herramientas interactivas para comprender mejor la seguridad
alimentaria en Puerto Rico.

Resumen del Proyecto

El Centro de Datos sobre Seguridad Alimentaria tiene como propósito mejorar la comprensión
de la seguridad alimentaria en Puerto Rico mediante la integración de datos provenientes
del BRFSS, ACS, la División de Comercio Exterior del Censo de los Estados Unidos (FTD)
y USDA FoodData Central (FDC).

El proyecto desarrolla bases de datos y aplicaciones interactivas dirigidas a estudiantes,
investigadores, legisladores y al público general. Además, mantiene un repositorio gratuito
con investigaciones realizadas por investigadores de la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Mayagüez.

Objetivos del Proyecto

  • Desarrollar habilidades en bases de datos para investigadores y estudiantes graduados.
  • Adquirir equipos para la creación y manejo de bases de datos en línea.
  • Desarrollar aplicaciones interactivas para monitorear la seguridad alimentaria.
  • Proveer conjuntos de datos que apoyen la investigación y la educación.
