In a groundbreaking achievement, Marci Denesiuk, an esteemed adjunct professor in the English Department of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, has been awarded a significant grant from the Digital Ethnic Futures Consortium (DEFCon). DEFCon is a national consortium renowned for fostering and promoting digital ethnic studies.
As an accomplished oral historian, Denesiuk has been honored with the 2023 DEFCon Capacity Building Fellowship. This prestigious fellowship seeks to foster innovation by “building institutional capacity at the intersection of digital humanities and ethnic studies.” With this support, Denesiuk is set to embark on a path to further explore the crossroads between digital technology and ethnic studies.
The grant will bolster an ongoing needs assessment project led by the Oral History Lab (OHL). This project is of paramount importance as it aims to identify and understand the needs of different disciplines and fields of study at the University of Puerto Rico that could benefit from the myriad services offered by the OHL.
These services include, but are not limited to, narrative research and qualitative interviewing services, digital archiving featuring discipline-specific search terminology, curated digital exhibitions, professional documentary filmmaking, and sophisticated data visualization tools. With this eclectic range of services, the OHL is poised to make a significant contribution to the academic landscape, facilitating research across multiple disciplines.
By harnessing the power of technology, Marci Denesiuk and the OHL are not only advancing ethnic studies but also creating bridges between traditional humanities and digital advancements. With this grant, the university’s commitment to fostering intersectional knowledge and utilizing technology to serve diverse academic disciplines is further solidified.

En un logro revolucionario, Marci Denesiuk, una estimada profesora adjunta en el Departamento de Inglés de la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Mayagüez, ha sido galardonada con una significativa subvención del Consorcio de Futuros Étnicos Digitales (DEFCon). DEFCon es un consorcio nacional reconocido por fomentar y promover a los profesionales de los estudios étnicos digitales.
Como una destacada historiadora oral, Denesiuk ha sido honrada con la Beca de Construcción de Capacidad DEFCon 2023. Esta prestigiosa beca busca fomentar la innovación al “construir capacidad institucional en la intersección de las humanidades digitales y los estudios étnicos”. Con este apoyo, Denesiuk está preparada para embarcarse en un camino para explorar aún más los cruces entre la tecnología digital y los estudios étnicos.
La subvención reforzará un proyecto de evaluación de necesidades en curso dirigido por el Laboratorio de Historia Oral (OHL). Este proyecto es de suma importancia, ya que tiene como objetivo identificar y comprender las necesidades de diferentes disciplinas y campos de estudio en la Universidad de Puerto Rico que podrían beneficiarse de la amplia gama de servicios ofrecidos por el OHL.
Estos servicios incluyen, pero no se limitan a, investigación narrativa y servicios de entrevista cualitativa, archivo digital con terminología de búsqueda específica de la disciplina, exposiciones digitales curadas, producción profesional de documentales y sofisticadas herramientas de visualización de datos. Con esta gama ecléctica de servicios, el OHL está preparado para hacer una contribución significativa al panorama académico, facilitando la investigación en múltiples disciplinas.
Al aprovechar el poder de la tecnología, Marci Denesiuk y el OHL no solo están avanzando en los estudios étnicos, sino también creando puentes entre las humanidades tradicionales y los avances digitales. Con esta subvención, el compromiso de la universidad de fomentar el conocimiento interseccional y utilizar la tecnología para servir a diversas disciplinas académicas se solidifica aún más.
