La Doctora Myrna Comas Pagán posee un Bachillerato en Agro-negocios y una Maestría en Economía Agrícola de la Universidad de Puerto Rico del Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez. Su  grado Doctoral lo completó en el  Recinto de Río Piedras en el Programa de Comercio Internacional.  Su Disertación Doctoral se basó en el tema de la Vulnerabilidad de las Cadenas de Suministros de Alimentos, el Cambio Climático y el Desarrollo de Estrategias de Adaptación.  Fue becada por el Programa de Economía Ambiental Latinoamericano y del Caribe (LACEEP). Ha publicado y presentado múltiples trabajos sobre seguridad alimentaria, vulnerabilidad de las cadenas de suministros de alimentos, estudios de viabilidad de fincas y agro-negocios, análisis de costos de producción agrícola y estudios de mercadeo de productos agrícolas en revistas tales como Harvard Business Review y IVEY Publisher.  Se ha desempeñado como profesora y especialista en el Departamento de Economía Agrícola del RUM, es Coordinadora de la Iniciativa Nacional de Seguridad Alimentaria del Servicio de Extensión Agrícola. Del 2013-2016 fue la Secretaria Constitucional del Departamento de Agricultura de Puerto Rico.  Además es agricultora.

Dr. Myrna Comas Pagán has a bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness and a master’s degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. She completed her International Trade Doctoral degree at the UPR Río Piedras.  Her Doctoral dissertation was based on the vulnerability of the food supply chains, climate change and the development of adaptation strategies.  She was a scholarship program of the Latin American and the Caribbean Environmental Economy Program (LACEEP).  She has published and presented many papers on food security, vulnerability of the food supply chains, farm and agri-business feasibility studies, analysis of costs of agricultural production and agricultural marketing in journals like Harvard Business Review and IVEY Publisher.  She works as professor of the University of Puerto Rico and coordinates the Puerto Rico Agricultural Extension Service Food Security Initiative. From 2013 to 2016 she was the Constitutional Secretary of Puerto Rico Department of Agriculture.  Also, she is a farmer.

Natural del Barrio Helechal de Barranquitas, PR. En el año 2002 comienza estudios en el Colegio de Ciencias Agrícolas de la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Mayagüez en el área de Protección de Cultivos. Luego en enero de 2006 continua estudios de maestría en fito-mejoramiento. El proyecto de maestría realizado fue en resistencia al Zucchini Yellow Mosaic Virus en calabaza tropical. Es reclutado por el Servicio de Extensión Agrícola (SEA) en agosto de 2017 y es agente agrícola en la Unidad Extendida de Río Piedras. Antes de ser reclutado por él SEA tuvo varias experiencias laborales en distintos escenarios de la agricultura, como Asistente de Investigación en compañía de producción de semillas. Como agente agrícola en el área de San Juan da apoyo en tres de las cuatro áreas programáticas del SEA, Agricultura, Mercadeo y Recursos Naturales (AMRN), Programa de Juventud y Clubes 4H y Desarrollo de los Recursos de la Comunidad (DRC).

Native neighbor from the Helechal in Barranquitas, PR. In 2002 he began studies at the College of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez in the area of ​​Crop Protection. Nacido en Aibonito, Puerto Rico (1985), Pablo Luis Jiménez Cruz creció en el pueblo de Barranquitas en una familia de educadores puertorriqueños. Fue socio del Club 4-H y participó en su Congreso y Conferencia Nacional. Es egresado del Colegio de Agricultura y Artes Mecánicas del Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM), en donde cursó estudios de Agronomía y Suelos y obtuvo su título de Agrónomo. En el RUM participó activamente de varias organizaciones estudiantiles y presidió el Consejo de Estudiantes (2006-2008). Al graduarse, se desempeñó como maestro de Educación Agrícola en varias escuelas de la zona montañosa. De 2013 a 2015 fue director del Programa de Educación Agrícola del Departamento de Educación y bajo su dirección logró aumentar el número de cursos del Programa. En 2015 fue electo presidente del Colegio de Agrónomos de Puerto Rico, siendo así el presidente más joven en la historia del Colegio. Actualmente se desempeña como Agente Agrícola del Servicio de Extensión Agrícola para los municipios de Carolina y Trujillo Alto.

Born in Aibonito, Puerto Rico (1985), Pablo Luis Jiménez Cruz grew up in the town of Barranquitas in a family of Puerto Rican educators. He was a member of the 4-H Club and participated in his Congress and National Conference. He is a graduate of the College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts of the Mayagüez University Campus (RUM), where he studied Agronomy and Soils and obtained his title as Agronomist. In the RUM, he actively participated in several student organizations and chaired the Student Council (2006-2008). Upon graduation, he served as a teacher of Agricultural Education in several schools in the mountainous area. From 2013 to 2015 he was director of the Agricultural Education Program of the Department of Education and under his direction he managed to increase the number of courses in the Program. In 2015 he was elected president of the College of Agronomists of Puerto Rico, thus being the youngest president in the history of the College. He currently serves as Agricultural Agent of the Agricultural Extension Service for the municipalities of Carolina and Trujillo Alto.

Nació en el pueblo de Juana Diaz, donde vivió su niñez y adolescencia. En el 1979 inicia sus estudios en el Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez. Motivada por su abuelo materno que era agricultor entro a la facilidad de ciencias agrícolas. En el 1992 comenzó sus estudios de maestría en el Recinto de Ciencias Médicas en la facultad de Salud Pública con una especialidad en Salud Ambiental donde realizo un trabajo sobre La Sucesión Ecológica de un Proceso de Lodos Activados y su Relación con la Concentración de Materia Orgánica y solidos suspendidos de Efluentes de una Elaboradora Productos Lácteos. Participo como recursos en adiestramientos al personal del departamento de Salud Ambiental del Departamento de Salud del gobierno de P.R. Organizo y dirigió el Departamento de Ornato del Municipio de Caguas. Junto a su esposo crearon una compañía de diseño paisajista. En la actualidad se desempeña como agente agrícola del municipio de Aibonito del Servicio de Extensión Agrícola.

She was born in the town of Juana Díaz, where she lived her childhood and adolescence. In 1979 she began her studies at University of Puerto Rico – Mayaguez Campus. Motivated by her maternal grandfather who was a farmer, she entered the agricultural science facility. In 1992 she began her master’s studies at the Medical Sciences Campus in the faculty of Public Health with a specialty in Environmental Health where she carried out a work on the Ecological Succession of an Activated Sludge Process and its Relationship with the Concentration of Organic Matter and suspended solids from Effluents from a Dairy Producer. She participates as a resource in the training of personnel of the Department of Environmental Health of the Department of Health of the government of P.R. She also organized the Ornate Department of the Municipality of Caguas. Together with her husband they created a landscape design company. She is currently carried out as an agricultural agent of the municipality of Aibonito of the Agricultural Extension Service.

Nacido en Santurce, y criado en el barrio Río Piedras de San Juan, es mayagüezano hace 25 años. Posee un Bachillerato en Artes de la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Río Piedras en Ciencias Políticas; una Maestría en Artes de Purdue University en West Lafayette en Políticas Comparadas; una Maestría en Artes de la State University of New York en Albany en Geopolítica del Caribe; un Doctorado en Filosofía de la State University of New York en Binghamton en Sociología Política; y una Certificación Post-graduada en Bioética del Instituto de Bioética Eugenio María de Hostos del Recinto de Ciencias Médicas de la UPR.  En 1997 inició su carrera académica en el Sistema de la UPR, donde se ha desempeñado como Catedrático en Ciencias Políticas, Geografía, Sociología y Antropología en los Recintos de Mayagüez y Aguadilla de la UPR, y desde el 2007 se ha desempeñado como Catedrático en Sociología Rural en el Programa de Desarrollo de los Recursos de la Comunidad del Servicio de Extensión Agrícola.  Su área de investigación se ha concentrado en asuntos de Pobreza y Desigualdad Social en Puerto Rico, identificación de barreras sociales y culturales a la sana alimentación y actividad física en niños en Puerto Rico y, más recientemente, al desarrollo de Instituciones Anclas en Puerto Rico. Ha servido como revisor del Journal of Nutrition Education y de Elsevier.   Es miembro de la Facultad Adjunta del Instituto Universitario para el Desarrollo de las Comunidades del RUM, y actualmente funge como Fiduciario y Enlace Comunitario en el Fideicomiso del Bosque Modelo de Puerto Rico.

Born in Santurce, and raised in the Río Piedras neighborhood of San Juan, he is mayagüezano 25 years ago. He has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras in Political Science; a Master of Arts from Purdue University at West Lafayette in Comparative Policies; a Master of Arts from the State University of New York in Albany in Caribbean  Geopolitics; a PhD in Philosophy from the State University of New York at Binghamton in Political Sociology; and a Post-Graduate Certification in Bioethics from the Eugenio María de Hostos Bioethics Institute of the UPR Medical Sciences Campus. In 1997 he began his academic career in the UPR System, where he has served as Professor in Political Science, Geography, Sociology and Anthropology at the Mayagüez and Aguadilla Precincts of the UPR, and since 2007 he has served as Professor in Sociology Rural in the Community Resources Development Program of the Agricultural Extension Service. His research area has focused on issues of Poverty and Social Inequality in Puerto Rico, identification of social and cultural barriers to healthy eating and physical activity in children in Puerto Rico and, more recently, to the development of Anchor Institutions in Puerto Rico. He has served as a reviewer for the Journal of Nutrition Education and Elsevier. He is a member of the Deputy Faculty of the University Institute for the Development of the RUM Communities, and currently serves as Trustee and Community Liaison in the Model Forest Trust of Puerto Rico.

Nacido y criado en el municipio de Bayamón (1988) encontró el interés hacia la agricultura a través de la investigación cuando ganó una competencia científica a nivel nacional en el tema de botánica. Cursó dos bachilleratos en ciencias agrícolas en la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Mayagüez, uno en protección de cultivos y otro en horticultura en el cual fue premiado como el estudiante más destacado de su clase. El agrónomo cursó grados de maestría en manejo integrado de plagas en la Escuela Superior de Ingeniería Agraria en la Universidad d Lérida, España. Durante su estancia los resultados de su tesis en control biológico de plagas fueron publicados en la revista científica BioControl. Al graduarse trabajó como gerente de construcción de áreas verdes comerciales e industriales donde administró proyectos de más de $1,000,000. Hace 5 años funge como agente agrícola de Servicio de Extensión Agrícola en los municipios de Cataño y Bayamón donde comparte sus conocimientos en agricultura comercial urbana. En su tiempo libre es agricultor comercial de recao, cilantrillo y ajíes.

Born and raised in the municipality of Bayamón (1988), he found interest in agriculture through research when he won a national scientific competition in the field of botany. He completed two bachelor’s degrees in agricultural sciences at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, one in crop protection and the other in horticulture in which he was awarded as the most outstanding student of his class. The agronomist completed master’s degrees in integrated pest management at the Higher School of Agricultural Engineering at the University of Lleida, Spain. During his stay, the results of his thesis on biological pest control were published in the scientific journal BioControl. Upon graduation he worked as a construction manager for commercial and industrial green areas where he managed projects of more than $ 1,000,000. Five years ago, he served as an agricultural agent for the Agricultural Extension Service in the municipalities of Cataño and Bayamón, where he shared his knowledge in commercial urban agriculture. In his spare time he is a commercial farmer of recao, coriander and chili peppers.

Nació en San Juan Puerto Rico y creció en la urbanización Country Club de Río Piedras. Comenzó a trabajar en la Universidad de Puerto Rico en el año 1991 en la Administración de Colegios Regionales. Posee un doctorado en Administración y Supervisión Educativa, Maestría en Planificación Ambiental y Bachillerato en Ciencias de Computadoras de la Universidad de Puerto Rico. Desde 1993 desarrolla proyectos comunitarios dirigidos al desarrollo sustentable, la autogestión y organización comunitaria. En el 2008 desarrolló junto a la comunidad de Capetillo en Rio Piedras uno de los primeros huertos comunitarios en PR. Sobre estos temas es autor del capitulo que publica sobre el Huerto de Capetillo en el libro titulado “Ambiente y Democracia” del Editorial de la Universidad de Puerto Rico y la “Guía Curricular para el Desarrollo Sustentable de Huertos Comunitarios”. En la Escuela de Ecología Familiar y Nutrición del Recinto de Rio Piedras de la UPR, ofreció desde el 2004 al 2015 los cursos “Situación Mundial y Local de Abastos de Alimentos”, y “Consumo Sostenible en la Familia y la Sociedad”. Es Catedrático Asociado en el Departamento de Economía Agrícola y Sociología Rural del Recinto de Mayagüez donde ofrece los cursos sobre “Organización Comunitaria”, “Sociología Rural” y “Uso de las Computadoras en las Ciencias Agrícolas”. Coordina junto a las agencias federales “Natural Resources and Conservation Service” y “Food and Nutrition Service” la propuesta “Community Garden”, la cual capacita sobre el desarrollo de sistemas de producción de hortalizas, manejo de desperdicios vegetales y cosecha de agua de lluvia entre otros temas transversales sobre organización comunitaria. Colabora como conferenciante con la organización CEMI y el programa “Farm to School” sobre la integración en el currículo escolar de los de huertos escolares. Es Líder del Área Programática de Desarrollo de los Recursos de la Comunidad donde colabora en el desarrollo de estrategias educativas y administrativas para mejorar el desarrollo sustentable de las comunidades.

He was born in San Juan Puerto Rico and grew up in the Country Club urbanization of Río Piedras. He began working at the University of Puerto Rico in 1991 in the Administration of Regional Schools. He has a doctorate in Educational Administration and Supervision, a Master’s in Environmental Planning and a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of Puerto Rico. Since 1993 he has been developing community projects aimed at sustainable development, self-management and community organization. In 2008, together with the Capetillo community in Rio Piedras, it developed one of the first community gardens in PR. On these issues, he is the author of the chapter he publishes on the Capetillo Garden in the book entitled “Environment and Democracy” of the Editorial of the University of Puerto Rico and the “Curriculum Guide for the Sustainable Development of Community Gardens.” At the School of Family Ecology and Nutrition of the Rio Piedras Campus of the UPR, he offered from 2004 to 2015 the courses “World and Local Situation of Food Supplies”, and “Sustainable Consumption in the Family and Society”. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology of the Mayagüez Campus where he offers courses on “Community Organization”, “Rural Sociology” and “Use of Computers in Agricultural Sciences”. Coordinates with the federal agencies “Natural Resources and Conservation Service” and “Food and Nutrition Service” the proposal “Community Garden”, which trains on the development of vegetable production systems, management of plant waste and harvesting rainwater among other cross-cutting themes on community organization. He collaborates as a lecturer with the CEMI organization and the “Farm to School” program on the integration into the school curriculum of school gardens. She is the Leader of the Programmatic Area of ​​Community Resource Development where she collaborates in the development of educational and administrative strategies to improve the sustainable development of communities.

Nashali Rivera Cancel es estudiante en la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Mayagüez que estudia Ingeniería en Computadoras con una concentracion menor en italiano. Siendo la hermana mayor de tres, se caracteriza por ser trabajadora, rápida y persistente. Durante su segundo año se unió al equipo de diseño del proyecto UPRM Moonbuggy. En 2017, se unió al SWE Boeing Team Tech en su proyecto actual asociado con Boston Scientific. Este proyecto fue presentado y compitió en la Conferencia WE18, ganando el segundo lugar. Debido a su participación en el equipo, se convirtió en parte del Capítulo SWE UPRM, en el que participó en muchas actividades. Esto le otorgó el SWE Star Member Award, que compensa al estudiante que lleva la imagen de liderazgo y compromiso con ellos. Ahora, ella está trabajando activamente en las actividades de la asociación para el año académico y es secretria de la misma. Además, ahora trabaja en el Servicio de Extensión Agrícola en un programa de divulgación como diseñadora de esta pagina.

Nashali Rivera Cancel is a junior in the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez studying Computer Engineering with a minor in Italian. Being the elder sister of three she is characterized by being a hardworker, quick learner and persistent. During her sophomore year she joined the UPRM Moonbuggy Project Design Team. In 2017, she joined the SWE Boeing Team Tech on their current project partnered with Boston Scientific. This project was presented and competed in the WE18 Conference, winning second place. Due to her participation in the team she became part of the SWE UPRM Chapter, in which she took part in many activities. This awarded her the SWE Star Member Award, which compensates the student who carries the image of leadership and commitment with them. Now, she is actively working in the association’s activities for the academic year and is the secretary. Furthermore, she now works in the Agricultural Extension Service in an outreach program as a web designer.

Actualmente cursa estudios graduados (Maestría) en Economía Agrícola y Sociología Rural en la misma institución (RUM), concentrándose mayormente en temas relacionados con el Cooperativismo. Se ha desempeñado como Asistente de Catedra, impartiendo el Laboratorio de Introducción a la Administración de Finca, de igual forma de ha desempeñado como Asistente de Investigación en varios Proyectos y Propuestas. Rafael A. Mejía García has a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus. He is currently pursuing graduate studies (Master’s) in Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology at the same institution (RUM), concentrating mostly on issues related to Cooperativism. He has worked as a Chair Assistant, teaching the Introduction Laboratory to the Farm Administration, as well as served as a Research Assistant in various Projects and Proposals. Jorge A. Cardona Lizardi is a student at the University of Puerto Rico’s Mayagüez Campus. He studies Agribusiness and a minor concentration in Agricultural Economics at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences where he is a student representative of his department and the faculty.

In addition, it has several specialized certifications in the areas of: Manufacture of consumer products, Agricultural Finance, Agricultural Marketing, Preventive Controls (PCQIC) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPC).

This young man has been working since he was 13 years old and has always stood out for his leadership in different extracurricular and community organizations. His passion for business has always been present.

In 2015, he joined his passion for business and agriculture. Little by little he gave shape to his business idea and he is currently the President and Chief Officer of Cardona Agro-Industries, LLC, a company dedicated to the marketing, sale and distribution of 100% local produce. He has worked in several summer internships including the Autonomous Municipality of Caguas and the Department of Economic Development and Commerce of the government of Puerto Rico for two consecutive summers. He has been recognized by the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce, House of Representatives and the United Retailers Association for his business vision.

On the other hand, thanks to Dr. Myrna Comas Pagán, Jorge have the opportunity to assist the NRCS and the USDA in the Urban Agriculture and Crop Tunnel Systems project.
