Objectives

The CSE Department is committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, and service aiming to contribute to the socioeconomic development of Puerto Rico through:

  • The education of a diverse, well-rounded, entrepreneurial engineering workforce with a keen sense of social responsibility and a vocation for global engagement.
  • The production of new knowledge and the transfer of technology.
  • The cultivation of strong ties with community, governmental, and non-governmental organizations.

    • Repeat courses with a D or F.
    • Repeat courses with C (if you didn’t reach a decent score with the first alternative).
    • Enroll in INGE 3011 (Does not have pre-requisites).
    • Enroll in required Physical Education courses.
    • Enroll in a suggested course from the socio-humanistic list that is approved by the Dean of Engineering.
    • Enroll in a course that is considered a free elective.
    • When a student fails a math course, he or she will be held back since math courses are usually a pre-requisite for the core courses, therefore the academic progress is hindered. By having to take up all of the free elective or socio-humanistic courses in order to maintain 12 credits or more, only the core courses will be left at the end of the bachelor’s degree making the semester harder on the student.
    • After failing at least two or three times in the courses of Pre-Calculus I or II, the academic progress will be considerably affected. As an alternate option, you may check for programs inside the campus which include programing but with a different focus or vision.
    • Course syllabus of the institution of origin, transcription of credits, and completing the Course Equivalence form in the Department.
    • Our programs begin with Calculus I. Whenever you have to enroll other math courses, you will have to pass by the department.
    • You can request an authorization to take courses in another institution in the office of the Registrar through a form. This form is completed by the Directors of the courses to be registered and the Department Director.
    • During the enrollment process, a period of orientation is separated to help the student prepare his study plan for the next semester.
    • Yes. When a student receives their acceptance letter they should contact the Department to arrange an appointment and know what courses they can include in their registration. It is the responsibility of the student to do this coordination since, in the middle of enrollment, it is extremely difficult to work with academic counseling due to the number of students waiting to be attended. Courses will be registered that DO NOT require the approval of equivalences except for those that the departments may have some official list accepting the course of the institution of origin.
    • The CIIC program offers students the possibility of taking four technical elective courses in any CSE areas of interest to them.  The INSO program fixes three of these courses to specific courses in Software Engineering: Requirements (INSO 4115), Design (INSO 4116) and Quality (INSO 4117) .  These course prepare students for the special demands of very large mission-critical software systems.  Such systems require more rigorous and and formal methodologies to manage much higher levels of complexity, size and risk.  Students in the CIIC program may select to form alternative study tracks according to interest other than Software Engineering; Data Science, AI, Security, Bioinformatics, among others.  All CIIC and INSO students take the same core of Computer Science and Engineering courses.
