This summer, Illinois State University’s (ISU) Latin American and Latino/a Studies program and the Department of Politics and Government collaborated to provide ISU students with an experiential learning trip to Puerto Rico. Students were able to immerse themselves in the topics they’ve been learning about such as environmental sustainability, community development, migration, and social justice. The trip began with a visit to the OHL on June 17. Dr. Maura Toro-Morn, professor of sociology and director of the Latin American and Latino/a Studies Program, said, “It was significant for us to begin our intellectual journey hosted by the Oral History Lab at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez. Students met with three colleagues to learn about their growing space within the general library, the oral history projects underway, and the significance of collecting oral histories as a form of pedagogy. Este verano, el Programa de Estudios Latinoamericanos y Latinos/as de Illinois State University (ISU) y el Departamento de Política y Gobierno colaboraron para ofrecer a estudiantes de ISU una experiencia de aprendizaje vivencial en Puerto Rico. Los estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de sumergirse en temas que habían estado estudiando, como la sostenibilidad ambiental, el desarrollo comunitario, la migración y la justicia social. El viaje comenzó con una visita al OHL el 17 de junio. La Dra. Maura Toro-Morn, profesora de Sociología y directora del Programa de Estudios Latinoamericanos y Latinos/as, expresó: “Para nosotros, fue significativo comenzar nuestro recorrido intelectual siendo recibidos por el Oral History Lab de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Mayagüez. Los estudiantes se reunieron con tres colegas para conocer el espacio que continúa desarrollándose dentro de la biblioteca general, los proyectos de historia oral que están en curso y la importancia de recopilar historias orales como una forma de pedagogía.
