A new South Holyoke mural by the creator of La Borinqueña, Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, was recently unveiled to the public as part of the new Puerto Rican Cultural District in Holyoke, MA. The mural “celebrates Puerto Rican heritage and the power of storytelling” and reflects some of the work done in an ongoing collaboration between Miranda-Rodriguez and the OHL.
In March 2025, Miranda-Rodriguez was interviewed by OHL director Ricia Chansky at the opening of his exhibit, Arte de la Borinqueña, displayed at Humanidades Puerto Rico in San Juan. The OHL later commissioned him to illustrate his interview (shown in part in the image above), and the result was the inspiration for this mural and for a mural to be installed in the General Library at UPR-Mayagüez outside of the OHL.
A year after the initial interview, the OHL team met with Miranda-Rodriguez to learn about the process of making the illustration, and in this conversation, he also reflected on his experiences working with the OHL. The OHL will be unveiling the mural and sharing a video of this conversation with Miranda-Rodriguez about his creative process in February 2027 at the celebration of the five-year anniversary of the lab. Un nuevo mural de South Holyoke por el creador de La Borinqueña, Edgardo Miranda-Rodríguez, fue presentado recientemente al público como parte del nuevo Distrito Cultural Puertorriqueño en Holyoke, MA. El mural “celebra la herencia puertorriqueña y el poder de contar historias” y refleja parte del trabajo realizado en una colaboración continua entre Miranda-Rodríguez y el OHL.
En marzo de 2025, Miranda-Rodríguez fue entrevistado por la directora del OHL, Ricia Chansky, durante la inauguración de su exposición, Arte de la Borinqueña, exhibida en Humanidades Puerto Rico, en San Juan. Posteriormente, el OHL le comisionó la creación de una ilustración basada en su entrevista (mostrada parcialmente en la imagen superior), y el resultado sirvió de inspiración para este mural y para otro mural que será instalado en la Biblioteca General de la UPR-Mayagüez, frente al OHL.
Un año después de la entrevista inicial, el equipo del OHL se reunió con Miranda-Rodríguez para conocer el proceso de creación de la ilustración. Durante esta conversación, también reflexionó sobre sus experiencias trabajando con el OHL. El OHL revelará el mural y compartirá un video de esta conversación con Miranda-Rodríguez sobre su proceso creativo en febrero de 2027, como parte de la celebración del quinto aniversario del laboratorio.
