The OHL congratulates the Humanities Action Lab (HAL) at Hunter College CUNY on receiving the 2026 Robert Kelley Memorial Award from the National Council on Public History (NCPH). The award committee celebrated HAL’s “translocal learning exchanges among students, faculty, and community organizers working on shared projects that has pioneered a model of mutual aid within the public history and humanities space.”
The OHL has partnered with HAL for several years. OHL Director Ricia Anne Chansky and Graduate Student Researcher Bryan Ramos Romero joined HAL in 2018. Chansky has taught related HAL climate justice courses at UPRM and has served as both a Faculty Climate Justice Fellow and the Senior Climate Justice Fellow for HAL.
HAL cosponsored Chansky’s research in the crisis oral history project, “Sheltered in Place: Storytelling and Stratified Disasters,” and additional OHL public-facing projects, including our zines and two of our documentaries: The Water Protectors (2025) and our forthcoming film on land rights in the Puerto Rican archipelago.
In 2024, the UPRM General Library hosted the HAL exhibition (pictured above), Climates of Inequality: Stories of Environmental Justice, which received over 55K visitors.
This spring, members of the OHL along with their community partners from the Centro de Apoyo Mutuo Jíbaro Lares and Colectivo PerlArte in La Perla participated in a HAL-sponsored exchange with another team in Milwaukee, WI where they framed a translocal discussion on land rights.
HAL will receive the award during the 2026 NCPH-AASLH Joint Meeting in Providence, Rhode Island during the NCPH Awards Breakfast on Saturday, September 19. Read more in the 2026 NCPH Awards announcement.
El OHL felicita al Humanities Action Lab (HAL) de Hunter College CUNY por recibir el Premio Conmemorativo Robert Kelley 2026 otorgado por el National Council on Public History (NCPH). El comité del premio destacó los “intercambios de aprendizaje translocales entre estudiantes, profesorado y organizadores comunitarios que trabajan en proyectos compartidos y que han sido pioneros en un modelo de apoyo mutuo dentro de los ámbitos de la historia pública y las humanidades”.
El OHL ha colaborado con HAL durante varios años. La directora del OHL, Ricia Anne Chansky, y el investigador graduado Bryan Ramos Romero se unieron a HAL en 2018. Durante esta primavera, miembros del OHL, junto con sus socios comunitarios del Centro de Apoyo Mutuo Jíbaro Lares y el Colectivo PerlArte de La Perla, participaron en un intercambio auspiciado por HAL con otro equipo en Milwaukee, Wisconsin, donde desarrollaron un diálogo translocal sobre los derechos a la tierra.
