There are chapters of honorary and professional societies operating on campus in the Civil Engineering program: American Concrete Institute (ACI), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Association of General Contractors (ACG), Association of & Water and Environment ( Chapter RUM) (PRW & EA RUM), Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), College of Engineers and Surveyors of Puerto Rico (IIC-CIAPR and IA-CIAPR), Society of Women in Engineering (SWE), Honor Society of Tau Beta Pi, Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, and Institute of Surveyors of Puerto Rico. All these societies are well organized and duly recognized by the faculty and administration of the university. Faculty counselors are assigned to each organization, and support is provided by the Department and the institution. Six of these organizations are coordinated by the Association of Surveying and Civil Engineering (AICA), which is composed of the presidents of each organization.
Although the faculty advisors for the student chapters do not receive any formal credit, their work is recognized as necessary and commendable either working on committees or giving any other institutional service to the academic community. This is considered positive during faculty assessments, promotions, when funds are allocated for trips or other benefits. Student associations and student chapters receive support through office space and equipment, secretarial services, and physical facilities for their activities. Occasional travel funds are also allocated for one or two delegates to attend events. Mass transportation is granted upon request and according to availability, for field trips and other educational activities. Regular meetings are held with the officers of the associations to discuss their plans and activities. Continuous support is received from student associations in various departmental activities. For associations and chapters belonging to the Civil Engineering program, a new office with permanent files and office material has been built.
