The legacy and student work of a unparalleled student is still alive and are perpetuated in the Mayagüez Campus (RUM) through a scholarship with his name that granted to a student, that like him, stand out academically in Mechanical Engineering area.
This was the Jesus Sanchez Vazquez Engineering Excellence Scholarship, instituted by the aerospace company Boeing since 2011, named after a former student of RUM, who was one of the six victims in a fire in the town of Florida, tragedy that shook the country that year and for his uncle was convicted, Justino Sanchez.
José Font, Boeing Executive, awarded the scholarship to Emmanuel Oquendo, student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, who as emphasized by his mentor, Dr. Jose Lugo, assistant professor of this faculty, expressed that Emmanuel exhibited very particular qualities similar to those found in Jesus.
