Life@ME

Students at the Department of Mechanical Engineering do more than just excel in their daily academics. Students excel socially and professionally due to the vast amount of development opportunities offered in the University of Puerto Rico; from Student Associations to National Competition Teams, we have just about everything you need to grow in your academical, professional and social life.

Student Representatives

In the Department of Mechanical Engineering, we take seriously what our students think, open to all students looking to become part of the decision-making process in the Department, the representatives advise the faculty and administration on issues that directly affect the students. Student Competition Teams

College Robotics for Manufacturing Engineering (CROME)

CROME is the first robotics association in the university. CROME is focused on practicing the manufacturing facet of robotic engineering. Your sponsorship using the link below will help us cover the essential expenses that includes the components and tools needed for the assembly of the different robots under CROME groups: RUMarino, RUMblebots, RUM-VEX. Acknowledging your sponsorship, we will gladly exhibit your logo or name in our new facilities at INSPIRE. It will be on the team official website and on the vehicle that will compete. Also we will gladly recognize your generosity during all of our presentations.

RUMarino

PROTEUS is the first Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) developed by RUMARINO for the International RoboSub Competition. Our team is made of 32 students from different majors of the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus. The objective of this competition is to design, manufacture and program an AUV that can complete the missions required tasks. These tasks have to be completed at all by the AUV. Some of these include: follow a designed path, drop markers, overcome a PVC obstacle, among other tasks. Because the underwater vehicle is completely autonomous, the control systems should be trustful and resistant.
RUMARINO has prequalified and will proudly represent the university in the International RoboSub Competition in San Diego, California. RUMARINO will be the first ones to represent the university, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean in this international competition.

RUMbleBots

We currently compete on the National Robotics League, a competition sponsored by the National Tooling and Machining Association. Here we compete at the 15lb weight class.

RUM-VEX

The AON-ROBOTICS Team, won the most important award at the Puerto Rico College Robotics Competition which took place on February 21, 2016. After this important achievement, AON-Robotics finilized in the final four at the VEX U World Championship 2016 held in Louisville, Kentucky from the April 20 – 23, 2016.

Formula Sun Grand Prix Challenge

Each academic year this team conceives, designs, builds and tests a single seat solar car for a competition of traveling 3000 km (1864.11 miles).

NASA Challenges

Moonbuggy Race

The UPRM Moonbuggy Project Design Team was founded in 2012 at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez by a group of students from Mechanical Engineering. Since then we have brought together students from a wide variety of engineering departments, like Electrical, Computer, Civil, and Industrial Engineering. Our objective is to manufacture a lightweight, strong, and cost effective human-powered space exploration vehicle. The team participates in the NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge which is held every year in the”U.S. Space and Rocket Center” in Huntsville, Alabama. The team members must design a vehicle that can withstand a series of engineering problems, similar to the problems encountered by the original Apollo 11 team. Each rover must be powered by two students (one male and one female) on a track that simulates lunar terrain including craters, rocks, slopes and lunar traps. The university with the lowest race and penalty time wins.

PACE Challenges

Personal Urban Mobility Access (PUMA)

The Personal Urban Mobility Access (PUMA) project challenge is the 2016-2018 PACE Global Collaboration Project. Industrial Design, Engineering and Manufacturing students from the PACE Institutions around the world will work closely together to design a solution that will address the first mile/last mile transportation needs for a target market. For this project students are encouraged to freely express as much creativity and conceptual innovation as possible as they create transformative and inspiring visions for the future.

SAE International

This group strives to further research, development, design, manufacture, and utilization of vehicles which operate on land and sea, and in air and space.

SAE Collegiate Design Series: Formula SAE®

Each academic year this team conceives, designs, builds, and tests a single seat formula race car to compete in the annual SAE Formula Competition

SAE Collegiate Design Series: Aero Design®

Each academic year this team conceives, designs, builds, and tests  two airplanes to compete in the annual SAE Aero Design.

SAE Collegiate Design Series: Baja SAE®

Each academic year this team conceives, designs, builds, and tests a single seat baja car to compete in the annual SAE Baja Competition
