Relevance of Thermophysical Properties in Industrial Applications

Abstract: In this presentation, we will discuss examples that highlight the importance of thermophysical properties in industrial applications. The current industrial challenges in the chemical and oil and gas industries demand high accuracy thermophysical property data to drive innovation, increase efﬁciency, and reduce costs in the current challenging energy economy. To this end, the presentation discusses experimental and theoretical research performed to develop a fundamental understanding of the key thermophysical properties — more speciﬁcally, obtaining high-accuracy PVT data for natural gas applications and characterization of polymeric systems at high pressure for the building and construction industry. Additionally, complex scenarios such as foaming in insulating materials and electrolyte systems for gas treating applications that require the combination of experimental and theoretical techniques are studied.
Diego Cristancho is a Research Scientist in the Oil & Gas business for the Dow Industrial Solutions organization and an Adjunct Assistant Professor for Texas A&M University. His specialty lies in thermophysical properties, gas treating technologies, materials and environmental sciences. Diego Cristancho received two bachelor’s degrees from the Universidad Industrial de Santander, Colombia: one in Physics and another in Chemical Engineering, and also a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the same university. In 2010, he received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Texas A&M University, USA. In the past, he had served in leading positions, such as: Simulator Kernel Programmer for Winsim. Inc. Advanced Engineering Software, Guest Researcher for the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Senior Engineer and Associate Scientist for the Dow Chemical Company in the Dow Analytical Sciences group and Research Assistant at Texas A&M University. He is also part of prestigious organizations such as the Joint ASME/AIChE Committee on Thermophysical Properties and the Gas Processors Association (GPA Midstream) research committee. Diego Cristancho has authored numerous scientific publications and given numerous international presentations.
